Sam Quek is a former Olympian who has had a successful career in both sports and TV but not everyone might know the extent of her impressive skill set.

Over the weekend she co-hosted Olympic Breakfast – a Games-focused replacement of BBC Breakfast – with sports presenter Dan Walker but not everyone may be familiar with the star.

Sam is most well-known for winning gold for Team GB as part of their field hockey team in Rio, but her success doesn’t end there.

Read on to find out everything you need to know about the former professional hockey player.

Who is Sam Quek?

Samantha Quek is renowned for her skills as a professional hockeyplayer.

She has competed for both England and Great Britain and was a member of Team GB that won gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, defeating the Netherlands on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw. This was the first time the women’s team had won gold at the Olympics.

Sam’s sporting background made her a perfect choice for presenting sports programmes on television.

The 32-year-old has presented a variety of sports shows on television since her sports career ended, including NFL coverage for the BBC, rugby union coverage for Channel 5, hockey coverage for BT Sport, and football coverage for Channel 4.

She was also a contestant on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2016 and Celebrity Masterchef in 2020, where she made it to the final three.

It was recently announced that she will become the first-ever permanent female captain on A Question of Sport.

How old is Sam Quek?

Sam was born in the Wirral on Merseyside on October 18, 1988. She is currently 32 years old.

Who is Sam Quek’s husband?

Sam is married to Tom Mairs, a property developer who starred in the reality show Secret Millionaire’ in 2010.

The couple has been together for eight years after meeting in a Liverpool bar and married three years ago.

He runs his own student housing company in Liverpool, which he started by renting out a five-bedroom house to his friends.

Tom’s company is now one of the largest independently owned student property providers in the North West of England.

The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Molly, in March after a ‘traumatic’ C-section following a 27 hour labour.

Tom told OK! magazine: ‘It was quite traumatic getting Molly out, because Sam’s abdominal muscles are so developed they couldn’t cut through them.

‘It was quite funny, because Sam was measuring quite small and they estimated Molly would be between 5lb and 6lb – but they got her out and the doctor was like, “She’s massive!”

‘They put her on the scales and she was 7lb 14oz. It must have been Sam’s abdominals keeping Molly in.’
