Following the news that Sky One has been axed, TV viewers have been sharing their fond memories of the channel, remembering their childhoods watching shows including The Simpsons and Dream Team with their families.
In a massive shake-up, Sky has announced that Sky One, a channel that’s been around since 1982, is being scrapped, while two new channels, Sky Max and Sky Showcase, are being introduced.
In a statement, Zai Bennett, the MD of Content for Sky UK & ROI, explained that ‘in this golden age of television, the sheer volume of incredible programming can be overwhelming’, which is why the firm is striving to make it ‘easier for people to find what they want to watch’.
Nonetheless, many TV viewers have expressed their sadness over Sky One coming to an end, a channel that has shown The Simpsons since 1990, which launched Dream Team in the 1990s and which also aired shows such as Malcolm in the Middle, WWE and Pokémon.
‘So many fond memories of waking up to a massive bowl of cereal and SmackDown on Sky One every Saturday morning. Channel also gave us The Simpsons, X-Files and Malcolm in the Middle. RIP Sky One,’ one person tweeted.
‘Sky One is closing? I used to love watching The Simpsons religiously after school. End of an era,’ another said.
Someone else thanked Sky One for bringing ‘their family together with The Simpsons, Futurama, The Flash, Arrow and all the Arrowverse shows’, stating that they ‘relied’ on the channel and that it will be ‘sorely missed’.
‘Sky One used to be it for me, Malcolm in the Middle, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Simpsons, Futurama and Brainiac. Top tier channel,’ another wrote.
Sky One is set to be taken off air on September 1 this year, before it is replaced with the new Sky channels.
Sky Showcase will fill Sky One’s 106 slot, pulling together highlights from across Sky’s TV portfolio.
Original Sky dramas will be shown on Sky Max, while original comedies will be made available to watch on Sky Comedy.

Sky Showcase will ‘curate a selection of the best TV shows from across Sky’s portfolio of entertainment brands’ and feature programmes from divisions of Sky including Sky Witness, Sky Documentaries, Sky Crime, Sky Nature, Sky Arts, Sky Max, Sky Comedy, Sky History, Sky Kids, SyFy and E!.
The changes to Sky, which coincide with the launch of the rebooted Never Mind the Buzzcocks, will come at no extra charge to customers.
