Sky One: When will it close and what new shows will air on Showcase and Max?

Sky is set to undergo some big changes (Picture: PA)

Sky is set for a big shake-up in the coming months – with Sky One set to disappear from the airwaves after 40 years on our screens.

The channel has been on the air since 1982 – making it the oldest non-terrestrial TV station in the UK – but it’s set to be replaced by two new channels, Sky Max and Sky Showcase, bringing together highlights from across the entire network.

It’s the end of an era for sure – but how much longer will Sky One be on the air, and what can we expect from Sky Max and Sky Showcase?

Here’s what you need to know about the changes…

When will Sky One close?

Sky One will leave the schedules on September 1.

It will be replaced in its channel slot by Sky Showcase, which will pull together highlights from across Sky’s channels.

MD of Content Sky UK & ROI, Zai Bennett told Metro.co.uk in a statement: ‘In this golden age of television, the sheer volume of incredible programming can be overwhelming.

‘Over the last 12 months we’ve been making it easier for people to find what they want to watch. From September those looking for the very best of Sky will find it at the top of their programme guide on Sky Showcase, while Sky Max will become the new home of blockbuster entertainment joining the host of genre-led channels launched in the past year – so whether you’re in the mood for true crime, a documentary or just a laugh there’s always a channel to suit.’

He added: ‘And if you’re not sure what to watch Sky Showcase will curate some of the highlights from our line-up so you can find something new to watch.’

The other new station, Sky Max, will become the place to watch Sky’s original dramas and other shows, while original comedies will find a new home on Sky Comedy.

What new shows will air on Sky Showcase and Max?

Sky Max will be home to the rebooted version of Never Mind The Buzzcocks, which will be landing on screens this autumn.

The revamp will see Noel Fielding returning as a team captain alongside This Country’s Daisy May Cooper – while Greg Davies has been announced as host and stand-up comic Jamali Maddix will serve as a regular guest.

The channel’s other shows will include The Russell Howard Hour, A League Of Their Own and COBRA.

Meanwhile, Sky Showcase ‘will curate a selection of the best TV shows from across Sky’s portfolio of entertainment brands’, featuring shows from the likes of Sky Witness, Sky Documentaries, Sky Crime, Sky Nature, Sky Arts, Sky Max, Sky Comedy, Sky History, Sky Kids, SyFy and E!.

Will any of Sky One’s shows be ending?

Sky has said that all of its existing shows will be continuing, and will be moving either to Sky Max or other channels.

Sky’s original comedies such as Code 404 and Hitmen Reloaded, for example, will move to Sky Comedy.

Sky Atlantic will be unaffected by the changes, and will still be the go-to channel for ‘high-concept original drama’.

And fans of The Simpsons don’t need to worry either, as the show will continue to be aired on Sky Showcase after Sky One goes off air.

What channel number will Sky Showcase and Sky Max be on?
