Will Smith tipped for Oscars success as emotional first trailer for King Richard drops: ‘I got goosebumps’

The first trailer has finally dropped for the upcoming King Richard film, starring Will Smith as the dad of Venus and Serena Williams, and something tell us we’re going to need to stock up on tissues.

The emotional movie, which is slated to be released in cinemas and on HBO Max in November, follows the journey of the proud father as he helps to nurture two of the biggest sports stars in history.

Richard (Will) can be seen taking Serena (Demi Singleton) and Venus (Saniyaa Sidney) to the tennis court come rain or shine in the teaser, as he does all he can to prepare them for greatness.

‘This world ain’t never had no respect for Richard Williams,’ he tells the youngsters. ‘But they’re going to respect y’all.’

Speaking to wife Oracene (Aunjanue Ellis), he adds: ‘Venus and Serena gonna shake up this world.’

It’s safe to say fans were left emotional by the preview, with many tipping Will for Oscars success.

‘I got goosebumps,’ one said, as another agreed: ‘Not me getting emotional and ready to shed a tear off the trailer alone. This looks so good and I can’t wait!’

A Twitter user replied: ‘What is this wetness that falls from my eyes.’

‘This looks good. Will better get that Oscar nom or Jada is going to come for you all,’ a follower warned.

Will leads a star-studded cast in King Richard, which is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, with Tony Goldwyn, Jon Bernthal and Kevin Dunn also in the mix.

The official synopsis reads: ‘Based on the true story that will inspire the world, Warner Bros. Pictures’ King Richard follows the journey of Richard Williams, an undeterred father instrumental in raising two of the most extraordinarily gifted athletes of all time, who will end up changing the sport of tennis forever.

‘Driven by a clear vision of their future and using unconventional methods, Richard has a plan that will take Venus and Serena Williams from the streets of Compton, California to the global stage as legendary icons.

King Richard will be released in UK cinemas on November 19, 2021.
