Dolly Parton backs Britney Spears in conservatorship battle: ‘I went through a lot of that’

Dolly Parton has said she ‘went through a lot’ of what Britney Spears is dealing with, as the pop star attempts to end her conservatorship.

While Dolly said she ‘tries not to get involved’ in other people’s issues, having gone through her own legal battle with singer-and-producer Porter Wagoner – who sued her for breach of contract in 1979 – she can relate to Britney’s battle.

Appearing on Watch What Happens Live this week, Andy Cohen asked for the icon’s take on the Free Britney movement, with the 9 to 5 hitmaker saying: ‘Well, I try to not get involved in other people’s business. I think she’s a wonderful artist and I think she’s a wonderful girl.

‘I only wish her the best.’

However, Dolly added she can understand where Britney is coming from, after the 39-year-old popstar ramped up her mission to have her dad Jamie Spears, 69, removed as her co-conservator after 13 years, hiring a new lawyer and asking for Jamie to be replaced by accountant Jason Rubin.

Dolly, 75, said: ‘And I understand all those crazy things. I went through a lot of that myself through a big lawsuit in my early days with Porter Wagoner trying to get out on my own.

‘So I understand where she’s coming from and how she feels. So I hope that all turns out the way that it should.’

Dolly’s comments follow a new filing from Jodi Montgomery, the conservator of Britney’s person since 2019, which backs her attorney Mathew Rosengart’s filing to have Jamie removed as conservator.

The filing further notes that Montgomery claims Britney’s ‘medical team agrees that it is not in the best interest of the Conservatee for Mr. Spears to remain Conservator’.

This could be a major development in Britney’s case, as the court will likely take any claim that Jamie is causing harm to the case seriously.

Montgomery also agrees with the potential appointment of CPA Jason Rubin to manage Britney’s finances, after Rosengart filed that and Britney selected Rubin to replace her father, should he be removed or suspended from the conservatorship.

The #FreeBritney movement has stepped up in recent months since the Circus singer spoke directly to the court in June, claiming that she was unable to remove her IUD or marry her boyfriend Sam Asghari under the conservatorship, and likened the situation to abuse.

The star is hoping to have all restrictions lifted and to regain control over her personal and financial decisions by having the conservatorship removed without medical assessment.
