Throughout the past two series of Ghosts on BBC One, one of the most entertaining aspects of the show has been getting to know the backstories of the ghosts who dwell in the haunted house inherited by Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe).
While the ghosts always deliver plenty of laughs, there are also many heart-wrenching moments in the show as viewers learn more about the phantoms’ lives before their deaths, with the creators teasing a particularly ‘heartbreaking’ episode with Kitty in series 3.
Kitty, a Georgian noblewoman portrayed by Lolly Adefope, is a jovial sort, always appearing with a smile on her face and spreading kindness to anyone who crosses her path.
During a recent interview with Metro.co.uk and other press, creators, writers and stars Ben Willbond, Laurence Rickard, Mathew Baynton and Jim Howick discussed the direction of the new series, emphasising the emotional impact of Lolly’s masterful performance.
‘There’s an episode particularly in this series where there’s a lot of love for Lolly, Lolly’s character as Kitty is just brilliant,’ they said.
They added that one specific episode with Kitty ‘will break your heart’ – so you’d better have your tissues at the ready.

‘There’s a couple of episodes this year where the reaction to watching the cut, watching what Lolly was doing was just literally… it made you feel like giving up a bit,’ they said.
‘She’s just, it’s so good. There’s some really funny moments, but also some moments that really properly tug on the heart strings. She’s really exceptional.’
As for some of the other characters, Laurence said that Humphrey – or at least his head – will be ‘more focal this time around’ as ‘there’s a bit of exploration for him as a character and also a bit of what’s happening in his life’.
Laurence added that some of the scenes he performed in as Humphrey were ‘very technically tricky’, resulting in him ‘pulling a few muscles this year’.
Nonetheless, ‘it was tremendously good fun and a real departure from what we’ve done with that character before’, he said.
Jim explained that the ‘flaws’ of scout leader Pat’s character will be explored in the new series, outlining how the creators like to ‘take a character and gradually over time subvert them and turn them into humans’.
Ben’s Captain will also have a spotlight shone on him, as viewers catch a glimpse of the character’s ‘internal musings’ while also seeing him ‘at work’ and in training.
While Romantic poet Thomas’ love for Alison was instantaneous, Matthew outlined how in series three, he ‘becomes deeply conflicted’.

Meanwhile, fans of the show will discover ‘another side of Lady Button’, played by Martha Howe-Douglas, in addition to seeing the ‘protective side’ of Mary, depicted by Katy Wix, emerge ‘in a very literal sense’.
We’ve never wanted to be haunted more.
Ghosts series 3 is due to premiere on Monday August 9 at 8.30pm on BBC One.
