Team GB women’s football team OUT of Tokyo Olympics after devastating 4-3 quarter-final defeat to Australia

TEAM GB were dumped out of the Olympics despite an Ellen White hat-trick after suffering a heartbreaking 4-3 extra-time defeat to Australia in the quarter-finals.

Hege Riise’s side were a matter of minutes away from reaching the Tokyo 2020 semi-finals before Sam Kerr pinged home an equaliser for 2-2.

Ellen White had earlier scored twice to cancel out Australia taking the lead.

Nikita Parris won Team GB a penalty in the second half of extra time – but Caroline Weir saw her spot-kick saved by Teagan Micah.

That seemed to galvanise Australia, and first 18-year-old Mary Fowler smashed home via a deflection for 3-2, and then Kerr scored her second of the game to seemingly seal safe passage.

White powered home a 115th-minute header to complete her hat-trick to give Team GB hope, but they couldn’t find that fourth goal.

Australia will face Sweden in the semis after their 3-1 win against the hosts Japan.
