Courteney Cox is still bemused by what Smelly Cat was eating on Friends, 17 years after the show ended.

The actress, 57, took to Instagram on Friday to wish her co-star Lisa Kudrow a happy 58th birthday and quizzed the her on the animal’s diet in the caption of her social media post.

Courteney, who played Monica Geller, wrote: ‘Happy birthday my Loot. You are the most unique, loving, direct, honest, smart, funny, talented, serious competitive gamer I know.

‘Not to mention talented writer, loving mother and wife. And that’s just the beginning of the list. Thanks for bringing so much joy into all of our lives. I love you ❤️.

‘Ps. I just have one question… Did you ever find out what they were feeding smelly cat?’

And it seems Lisa, who played Phoebe Buffay on the show, has no clue either, responding in the comments: ‘You see… THAT IS THE QUESTION! Love you my Courteney.’

Phoebe wrote a ditty to the stinky feline with the tune first appearing in the sixth episode of the show’s second season in 1995.

In the instalment, musician Chrissie Hynde, 69, is hired as coffee house Central Perk’s in-house performer, with Phoebe teaching her to play Smelly Cat, and with the song being performed frequently throughout all 10 seasons.

Phoebe sings in the piece: ‘Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat, what are they feeding you? Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat, it’s not your fault.’

Lisa performed the song during the HBO Max’s Friends: The Reunion earlier this year with Lady Gaga.

During an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show, Lisa admitted she had forgotten how to play Smelly Cat and had to relearn the tune.

She said: ‘I was really nervous when I first heard that [it was going to be a duet]. And then I prepared. I realised I had to learn Smelly Cat again. I tuned my guitar and realised I don’t know the chords.

‘I Googled it. All the chords were there for Smelly Cat! So thank you world, for posting the chords.’
