Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has taken to social media to celebrate his highest-ever Rotten Tomato score with Jungle Cruise, which released on Friday in cinemas and on Disney Plus via Premier Access.

The 49-year-old star, who is one of the world’s highest-grossing and highest-paid actors, stars as Frank ‘Skipper’ Wolff in the action-adventure comedy, which is based on the iconic Disney Parks attraction that Walt Disney conceptualised for Disneyland’s opening day in 1955.

The film had originally been sailing towards a summer 2020 release before Disney postponed its release amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Posting near-identical remarks on both Twitter and Instagram, the former wrestler wrote: ‘Just blown away. Thank you!!! Highest @RottenTomatoes audience score of my entire career ~ and that’s a long ass time cause I’m a dinosaur.

‘Jumanji 87% Jumanji 2 87% Hobbs 88% Moana 89% JUNGLE CRUISE 94%!!!! [sic]

‘People have spoken! The adventure of a lifetime….’

The film posted a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes on its release day, 30 July, although it has dropped since slightly to 93% as of 1 August, which still puts it a few points ahead of Johnson’s second most popular film with audiences, Disney’s Moana.

It’s also ‘fresh’ on the Tomatometer at 63%, which is the critic score for the film based on 259 reviews currently. Its fresh status reveals that it has had more positive than negative reviews so far, otherwise it would rate as ‘rotten’.

The film has also snagged $32.4million (£23.4m) in US ticket sales on its opening weekend, plus another $30m (£21.5m) from its Disney Plus Premier Access release, which are respectable figures in current circumstances.

Jungle Cruise also stars Emily Blunt as Dr Lily Houghton, a botanist keen to discover a legendary flower with magical healing powers in the Amazon, and Frank is the skipper with the boat that can help get her there.

Along for the ride is Jack Whitehall as her less-than-enthusiastic brother MacGregor, who is the first openly gay character in a major Disney movie.

Talking about his experience making the film with Metro.co.uk, Jack admitted to finding it ‘humiliating’ when he dislocated a rib while on an exercise bike – off set – as he tried to read the subtitles on a Drew Barrymore film.

The comedian explained: ‘It felt just so humiliating when Dwayne [Johnson] is pumping huge amounts of iron over in his gym and I dislocate a rib watching 50 First Dates on an exercise bike!’

Jungle Cruise is in cinemas now and available on Disney Plus with Premier Access.
