New TV series dropping in August to get you through the rest of summer

Plenty of new shows are coming to television screens in August to entertain viewers for the rest of the summer.

While July brought us a number of binge-worthy treats, including the current series of Love Island over on ITV2 and Netflix’s totally bonkers dating programme Sexy Beasts, there’s plenty more on the horizon.

Of course, spending hours deciding what to watch is always a bit of a hassle, so we’ve dug out a selection of what to watch this month.

You’re welcome.

Pose season 3 finale on BBC

The Pose finale is finally heading to the BBC (Picture: BBC)

This Ryan Murphy-produced series is set to make a comeback to BBC Two and BBC iPlayer for its final season on Sunday 8 August.

All episodes will be available on iPlayer from that date and episodes will air on BBC Two weekly.

The drama series tells the story of New York’s African-American and LGBTQ gender-nonconforming drag ball culture in the 80s in the first season, the early 90s in the second and the late 90s in the third.

The show’s last series first aired on FX in America in June, with producer Ryan saying of the ending: ‘It was a very difficult decision for us to make, but this has been an incredible journey and we have told the story that we wanted to tell the way that we wanted to tell it.’

Ghosts season 3

The third season of Ghosts is set to air on BBC One at 8.30pm on Monday 9 August.

The sitcom follows a collection of ghosts from different historical periods as they haunt a country house.

Filming on the show began in February this year and production ended in April, with the creators having to adjust due to coronavirus.

While the third series is set to air this summer, there is no news yet as to whether the programme will be commissioned further than this.

On continuing with more seasons, creator Ben Willbond told the Radio Times last year: ‘It would be lovely because I think this time around in the writing process, as we unearth more, you just go “oh wow, we could do that in series four,” but we haven’t got a series four!

‘It’s a nice feeling when you go, “actually we’ve got a lot of road here creatively”. It’s a nice prospect, but you are just beholden to whether the BBC want more or not. It’s a really hard thing to contend with.’

The Walking Dead finale season 11a

The final series, season 11, of The Walking Dead has 24 episodes, with the first half set to premiere on Sunday 22 August on AMX in the US and Monday 23 August on Disney+’s Star in the UK.

The official synopsis reads: ‘Alexandria has more people than it can manage to feed and protect. Their situation is dire as tensions heat up over past events and self-preservation rises to the surface within the ravaged walls.

‘They must secure more food while they attempt to restore Alexandria before it collapses like countless other communities they have come across throughout the years. But where and how?’

Scott Gimple, chief content officer for the Walking Dead franchise, previously confirmed the show’s end, saying in a statement: ‘It’s been 10 years ‘gone bye;’ what lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that.

‘What’s clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers, and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic – and supported by the best fans in the world.’

The second part of series 11 is set to air in 2022.

Great British Bake Off

The Great British Bake Off is set to return this year with filming having already commensed.

A release date is yet to be announced but it usually begins in August or September.

Speaking on Lorraine in May, presenter Matt Lucas said: ‘We’re starting very soon. Like last year we’re going into a bubble. All self-isolating and getting tested and then we’re going into COVID-free bubble, so we can all taste each other’s bakes and there can be handshakes and all sorts.’

He added: ‘I’ve seen the video clips of all the new bakers and there’s some brilliant ones in there.’

Married At First Sight UK

A trailer for an Australian-inspired version of Married At First Sight was released by show makers last month.

Mel Schilling from the show Down Under will join Paul C Brunson and Charlene Douglas on the British version of the show.

After signing up for the show, sex and relationship therapist Charlene said: ‘I am delighted to be joining this new series of Married at First Sight UK. This is a brand-new role for the show and it is important to remember that these couples have just met and are going to be getting to know each other quickly.

‘I’m really looking forward to getting to know them all and digging deeper into their relationships and finding new ways for them to connect. It’s also really interesting to bring my knowledge alongside the expertise of Mel and Paul.

‘As a trio, I think we will make a really great team.’

A release date is yet to be announced but is set to be revealed soon.
