The Grand Tour: Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond’s most savage insults and feuds

We know they don’t always mean it, but Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond haven’t been afraid of the odd insult or feud over the years.

The Grand Tour presenters are known for their bickering and infighting and, while James has previously described it as ‘pantomime’ put on for the camera, they can get pretty savage from time to time.

While the trio has managed to annoy an awful lot of people outside of their immediate circle in the past – including the entire populations of Mexico and Argentina – they’ve spent a lot of time winding themselves up as well.

With Jeremy recently hitting out at his co-stars and banning them from his show Clarkson’s Farm, we’ve taken a look back at some of their tetchiest moments together.

Strap in, because here are the most savage feuds and insults shared between the Grand Tour trio:

When James May said the stars all ‘hate each other’

James must have been in a particularly bad mood with his co-stars back in 2016, when he hit out at them in an interview and said the presenters ‘hate each other’.

While his tongue might have been firmly in his cheek when he said it, the presenter admitted that they never socialise and don’t like one another one bit – something which is pretty hard to believe if you watch the show itself.

‘We work because we hate each other. That’s the magic formula. It doesn’t work for bands. I think it works for groups of TV presenters. We get on each other’s tits massively,’ he told The Guardian.

When asked if they socialise off-screen, the 58-year-old replied ‘We try not to. That’s a no.’

Tell us what you really think, James…

When Richard Hammond said the others were ‘jealous’ of his new show

The Grand Tour stars have all headed up their own solo projects after their big move to Amazon, including Richard who fronted The Great Escapists.

How do James and Jeremy feel about the show? Well, according to Richard, they’re very jealous about it.

Speaking on the One Show, Richard said: ‘Oh man, they were so jealous, still are.’

Exaggerating, he added: ‘Seething almost, won’t return my calls… They’re just so jealous, it’s horrible. I feel really bad for them. I think I’ve broken their hearts.’

As the show involved Richard and his co-star Tory Belleci shipwrecked together on a desert island, using nothing but their scrapped shipwreck for survival, we actually imagine Jeremy and James were actually quite happy to sit that one out.

When Jeremy Clarkson celebrated spending less time with James May

Emotions ran high when the Grand Tour stars wrapped up their final ever studio show, with the series moving exclusively to specials filmed on the road.

Jeremy struggled to hold back the tears during the filming. But even then, he couldn’t turn down an opportunity to insult his old pal James.

‘I’m an emotional old sausage,’ Jeremy told The Sun afterwards. ‘I like having a studio audience but I’m getting old now. So life will be a bit easier just doing the specials.

‘But on the upside, it does mean I get to spend less of my life with James May. There is always a silver lining.’

When James called Jeremy a ‘knob’

James, for one, certainly isn’t afraid of speaking his mind during interviews about the show, and slinging a few insults the way of his co-stars in the process.

The presenter previously declared that he was ‘not mates’ with Jeremy and Richard, and even called Jeremy a ‘knob’.

Speaking to The Telegraph, May said that he has ‘never really changed [his] view of Jeremy, which is that he is a “knob”, as [he] said on the news’ [after Clarkson’s assault of a BBC producer in 2015].’

He also said that Jeremy is ‘a bit of a Stuckist: part of him is actually locked in the 1920s.’

In the very same interview, James also hit out at co-host Richard, taking him apart with a tirade of pretty hilarious insults.

When asked what the most irritating things about Richard were, he replied: ‘His face. His chirpiness and his silly little beard.’

James also said he knew Richard had recovered from his car crash on Top Gear in 2006 because he was ‘just as much of a t*** as he always was’ before the accident.

When Jeremy called James ‘ugly’

In a moment of footage that has become a favourite among fans online, the love/hate relationship between Jeremy and James was encapsulated when Jeremy called James ugly, and James had the perfect riposte.

‘When I first met you I thought you were ugly. Now… I still think you’re ugly,’ Jeremy said.

Delivering one of the most British comebacks we’ve ever heard, James replied: ‘Crushing criticism from someone so handsome.’

Few moments sum up the Grand Tour group dynamic quite so well.

Jeremy ‘bans’ Richard and James from Clarkson’s Farm

Jeremy is finding some success away from the Grand Tour thanks to the success of his passion project Clarkson’s Farm, and he’s certainly not giving anyone else a slice of the action.

The 61-year-old recently said that Richard and James wouldn’t be allowed on his farming show ‘in a million years’.

It all comes after Amazon Prime Video renewed the hit documentary for a second series, causing Jeremy to take to Twitter in celebration.

When one fan asked: ‘Can we get a cameo from @RichardHammond and Captain Slow?’ Jeremy replied: ‘Not in a million years.’

Thankfully, Richard took it all very well. When asked about being banned, Richard said: ‘I read that! I mean, I love the show. The key thing about the show, and you can tell when you watch it, is that it is a genuine passion.

The first teaser for Clarkson’s Farm earlier this year saw Jeremy say he literally ‘feels sick’ thinking about his The Grand Tour co-host James’s face in a savage takedown.

The clip saw him apply for Farmer of The Year, feeling nauseated when thinking about his co-star.

‘Right, I’ve had an email inviting me to the Farmer of the Year Award. Why would I not do that?’ he said.

Rehearsing his speech, he declares he’s ‘proud, humbled, honoured, touched – not in a bad way’.

Trying to put on the waterworks, he takes desperate measures to think of James’ face.

‘No, that’s making me sick,’ he added.

The Grand Tour is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
