‘I’ll Probably Just Go and Sell Hot Sauce’- Dustin Poirier Hints at Retirement Ahead of Title Fight Against Charles Oliveira

UFC lightweight maestro Dustin Poirier is currently over cloud nine after claiming bragging rights over the ‘Notorious’ Conor McGregor at UFC 264. The Lafayette native has set his eyes on the only thing that has eluded him till now- the undisputed lightweight gold.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, ‘The Diamond’ detailed his quest for the undisputed gold. He also had something to say about his next opponent, Charles Oliveira, and what happens after he wins the gold.

“For me, being (an) undisputed world champion was the goal from the beginning,” Poirier said. “If I can tick that box, I’ve done it all in the sport of mixed martial arts.”

While the UFC hasn’t made it official yet, Poirier knows he’s getting the title challenge, and thus, gave his honest opinion on what he thinks about the Brazilian champ.

“Oliveira is a very dangerous guy. I think he’s improving more and more in his striking, putting guys down, he’s long especially for that weight class and I think he’s probably the best jiu-jitsu practitioner in the UFC roster right now.”

The former interim champ further detailed how ‘do Bronx’ uses jiu-jitsu in defense and in offense too. According to him, Oliveira has earned his dues after serving UFC for so long.

When asked what he would do after he wins the title, the American said, “We’ll see man. I’ll probably just go and sell hot sauce.”

Dustin Poirier on managing his stardom

With the departure of Khabib and the downfall of Conor, Poirier has gained the most in the division. Apart from the only loss coming against ‘The Eagle’, he has remained unbeaten mostly in the last 4 years. While he has reached a level of stardom that can distract him, he knows how to deal with it.

“It is a great feeling when I get home but then I am being pulled in so many different directions,” he said. “Everybody is trying to get me to agree to stuff and I only have so much time to be a dad.”

He further added, “I turn everything off when it is time to prepare for a fight, all the meetings, the places to be, all I do is focus for eight weeks on the fight and get tunnel vision with my blinkers on and after that, we can knock down all the other stuff I have to do.”

Poirier has now got the better of almost everyone. He has picked up victories against the likes of Max Holloway, McGregor, and even Justin Gaethje. The only frontier left for him to conquer is the undisputed title.
