Nicolas Cage’s new film Pig is being lapped up by critics with the flick scoring a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 83% on Metacritic.

The actor’s latest movie tells the tale of a truffle hunter who returns to Portland, Oregan to find his kidnapped pig.

The thriller’s trailer opens with Oscar winner Nicolas, 57, as his character Rob whistling for his prized pig which trots after him out the door and into the woods.

The pair can then be seen hunting for truffles together before they return home with the pig sitting comfortably on his bed.

Rob is suddenly seen being thrown to the floor, before he comes round and attempts to whistle out to his pig.

In a voiceover, Rob says: ‘I remember every meal I ever cooked, I remember every person I ever served,’ before someone replies: ‘You lived your life for them and they don’t even see you, you don’t even see yourself.’

The film had a short two week theatrical released and is now available for viewing online on the likes of Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu and Spectrum.

One reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes described Nicolas’s performance as his ‘best performance in years’, while another person wrote: ‘Pig is fundamentally a story about the hold that memories have on us: memories of those we’ve lost, of dreams abandoned, of the good times (rare though they may have been).

‘And this story seems to have reawakened Cage himself.’

Meanwhile, it emerged last month Nicolas will not star as Joe Exotic in a planned scripted series based on the hit Netflix series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness.

The project was put on hold on Amazon after Nicolas was touted to appear.

‘We should clear the record,’ Nicolas told Variety. ‘I read two excellent scripts, which I did think were excellent, but I think Amazon ultimately felt that it was material that had become past tense because it took so long for it to come together.’

He added: ‘They felt at one point that it was lightning in a bottle, but that point has since faded into the distance and it’s no longer relevant.’
