‘A new star is born’: BBC Breakfast viewers demand Sam Quek replaces Louise Minchin after ‘outstanding’ Olympics coverage

As Sam Quek continues to win over more fans daily co-hosting the BBC’s Olympic Breakfast with Dan Walker, fans are in agreement: she should join BBC Breakfast permanently.

BBC Breakfast has been temporarily replaced by the Tokyo 2020 coverage, while Louise Minchin is set to depart the morning news show over the coming weeks after 20 years.

With business back to normal from next week as the games come to a close, early risers are gutted Sam and Dan will no longer be waking them up in the mornings.

One viewer tweeted Dan, and wrote: ‘Dan I think @SamanthaQuek would be ideal to step in for @louiseminchin when she leaves BBC Breakfast, quality, enthusiastic presenting on the Olympics, Makes me get up in a morning!’

And they’re not alone, as hundreds more have shared the same sentiment on social media.

‘A new star has been born on #bbcolympics,’ someone else gleefully tweeted. ‘@SamanthaQuek a new career on #bbcbreakfast.’

A third said: ‘@SamanthaQuek hope you get offered Louise Minchins job on @BBCBreakfast you and Dan are a winning team,’ which was echoed by: ‘Going to miss @SamanthaQuek she has been absolutely outstanding . Should be on @BBCBreakfast permanently.’

From sticking up for Simone Biles when she dropped out of the games over her mental health, to showcasing her expertise – Sam has been one of the shining stars of the UK’s Tokyo 2020 coverage and is subsequently inspiring young girls up and down the country.

One doting father tweeted: ‘@SamanthaQuek @mrdanwalker watching Qlympic breakfast with my ten year old daughter, when she turns to me and says, Daddy, I want to be just like that women on TV. That was you Sam.’

If the powers that be are still deciding who should replace Louise, it seems like there’s a clear favourite for fans.

Louise announced her BBC breakfast departure last month, telling viewers: ‘ have decided it is time I stopped setting my alarm for 3.40 in the morning.

‘This year, it will be 20 years since I first presented this programme. Since then I felt part of a huge BBC Breakfast family which includes everyone who works here, everyone on the team and every one of you who watches the programme. I’ve loved being part of it.

‘But. There is a but. You know about the but. I have decided that is time that I stopped setting my alarm for 3.40 – sometimes when I’m feeling really rebellious, 3.46 – in the morning, and I’m going to be leaving the programme.’

The BBC has advertised the job opening, hunting for a new chief presenter.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
