BREAKING: Women’s Golf Competition at Risk of Being Reduced to 54-Holes at Tokyo Olympics 2020
The men’s golf competition just concluded last week at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The women’s golf events are scheduled to begin this Thursday, but the competition is at risk of being cut down to just 54-holes. The Kasumigaseki Country Club is a fantastic golf course, but an approaching storm has forced the officials to consider shortening the women’s competition.
This would just be unfair, but humans have no control over how nature behaves at times. Hence, if there is a storm predicted in Tokyo, nothing can be done to stop it from pouring down. The only possible option is to avoid the storm by finishing off the golf events earlier than expected.
Women’s golf events at risk of being trimmed at Tokyo Olympics 2020
The Olympics format is pretty simple when it comes to golf. It is a 72-hole stroke play event with no cuts in between. Hence, all the competing players stay for four days after which a winner emerges over the weekend.
However, with the storm prediction, a notice has been sent to all the competitors about a potential change in schedule. The weather is expected to turn bad in Tokyo and there is a storm forecast on Saturday and Sunday, which will hinder the possibilities of a thrilling final round.
Hence, based on experts’ opinions it is not advisable to play more than 18 holes on a day at the Kasumigaseki Country Club this week. This is the information the golfers received in their notice letters.

This is incredibly disheartening as there is a chance of an entire round being cut from the women’s golf event. The tournament is at risk of being reduced from 72-holes to 54-holes. However, the official decision will only be taken after the conclusion of Round 2.
This is just a precautionary measure taken by the IGF Competitions Committee. If the storm recedes earlier than expected, then the competition will go ahead with all four rounds.

How does the leaderboard look after Round 1?
The first round in the women’s golf event saw more than 15 players shoot under-par. It is a decent number which will only open up room for more competition as the rounds progress. Swedish golfer Madelene Sagstrom is currently leading the pack after shooting 5-under 66 on Wednesday.

Furthermore, there are two players at T2 with a score of 4-under for the tournament. Nelly Korda and India’s Aditi Ashok share second place at the moment, while Matilda Castren, Jin Young Ko, and Carlota Ciganda are all T3 at 3-under.
