Fans think the new Street Fighter 5 character is actually from Street Fighter 6

It’s a big day for Street Fighter news, as Guile and Cammy are added to Fortnite and mysterious new character Luke to Street Fighter 5.

Capcom has never officially talked about Street Fighter 6 but given Street Fighter 5 is now five years old it seems inevitable its replacement will appear in the next couple of years, if not sooner.

What may be the first official hint of that comes via new DLC character Luke, a brand new fighter who many think may be one of the main characters of Street Fighter 6.

Kickboxer Luke is the final addition for the fifth season of Street Fighter 5 and described by director Takayuki Nakayama as ‘a glimpse into the future’ of the franchise, which probably means only one thing.

Even the PlayStation Blog talks about sharing more information on ‘the future of Street Fighter’ – note that’s Street Fighter in general and not specifically Street Fighter 5.

Although it’s impossible to tell exactly when they might make an announcement, everything seems to be pointing towards a reveal in the near future, although since Luke won’t be released until November it’s unlikely to happen until after that.

With the dog tags and strange blonde haircut he looks very much like he could be Guile’s son, so perhaps an indication that the new game will be taking a next generation approach to its line-up?

Others have pointed out that the name of character Rook, who was intended to appear in the cancelled game Capcom Fighting All-Stars, was sometimes given as Luke and that they may be the same character.

Rook does look somewhat similar to Luke and his speciality is leg attacks. Also, despite never actually appearing in any Street Fighter game, he was still given an entry in the official character guide.

Rook was also referenced in Ingrid’s story in Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX and appeared with her, and D.D., in Japanese-only mobile game Otoranger.

There have already been rumours of Ingrid appearing in Street Fighter 5 but this suggests that her storyline and that of the four ‘Code Holders’ – her, Rook, D.D., and Death – will become a key part of Street Fighter 6.

Or not. It’s impossible to say without confirmation from Capcom and that is a deep cut even for the Street Fighter series’ convoluted mythology.

While you wait for that official Street Fighter 6 announcement another two classic characters have been added to Fortnite.

Ryu and Chun-Li are already in the game but now so is Cammy and Guile, or rather they will be from Sunday, August 8.

Their addition is being described as ‘Round 2’ of the Street Fighter crossover, which leaves open the possibility of Round 3 and beyond – which could also end up being used to promote Street Fighter 6…
