John Whaite got overwhelmed with emotion after he was announced as part of the first all-male couple on Strictly Come Dancing 2021.

The Great British Bake Off star is set to make history as he becomes the first male contestant to pair up with a male pro partner.

It clearly means the world to the chef, as he shared an emotional video on Instagram, crying as he came off air after the announcement on Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 Breakfast Show.

‘Oh my god, you guys, there’s so many nice messages already and I’ve only just come off air and I’m actually crying real tears because of how nice you’re all being,’ he said in the sweet video.

‘I’m so excited to be on Strictly, it’s a dream come true and it’s even more of a dream to be doing the first all-male partnership and I hope that there are kids watching who look up and think, “It’s okay to be who you are”.

‘So thanks for all the messages, I’m going back to bed, lots of love!’

Matt Lucas announced the exciting news, as he stood in for Zoe on her show.

‘I am so excited! I’m very, very nervous. I’m actually shaking inside,’ John admitted.

‘I was born to be on that dancefloor. I’m going to have to be taken off kicking and screaming every week.’

John is known for winning the Bake Off in 2012, as well as appearing as a chef on shows such as Lorraine.

He’s joining the line-up alongside Tom Fletcher, Robert Webb, and AJ Odudu.

It’ll only be Strictly’s second ever same-sex partnership, with boxer Nicola Adams being paired with Katya Jones last year.

However, the pair’s journey was cut short when Katya tested positive for Covid-19.

The rest of this year’s line-up will be announced in the coming days – we can’t wait!

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One in autumn this year.
