Wrestler Gable Steveson won an Olympic gold medal in the men’s freestyle 125kg and WWE fans are delighted.

The 21-year-old grappler put on a fantastic showing en route to beating Georgia’s Geno Petriashvili 10-8 in the final, and there’s plenty of talk that he could make the jump from the mat to the squared circle now that his Tokyo 2020 journey is complete.

BT Sport, the official broadcaster for WWE in the UK, tweeted: ‘Congratulations @GableSteveson! Gold for USA in the most dramatic fashion. Another @HeymanHustle guy on top… See you soon? #Tokyo2020’

And SmackDown commentator Pat McAfee wrote: ‘TOP OF THE MORNING @GableSteveson just won an Olympic Gold Medal on a buzzer beating take DAHN.. CONGRATS CHAMP Let’s GOOOOO (sic)’

And some fans are convinced Gable is going to follow in Kurt Angle’s footsteps by making a splash in WWE after winning Olympic gold.

‘Gable Steveson is gonna be a future WWE wrestler,’ one fan predicted.

Congratulations @GableSteveson!

Another added: ‘Vince McMahon…. Gable Steveson is your next Olympic Hero… It’s true… it’s true… it’s Damn True!! Absolutely Incredible!! @RealKurtAngle (sic)’

And a different fan is clearly putting some thought into the situation, as they wrote: ‘If WWE really want Gable Steveson, they better throw him an empty cheque book. What a performance from the big man at the Olympics.’

It’s not just wishful thinking, as Gable has been tied with the company a lot over the past few months.

Earlier this year, the man himself teased: ‘That’s a hard question. It’s all in the air right now. There’s a lot of things going on.

‘I want this Tokyo gold first, and we’ll go from there. WWE is in the near future. When? I’m not sure, but I’ll be there.’

Triple H has since weighed in on the possibility after Gable appeared in the crowd at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver, and he thinks he can follow in the footsteps of Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar.

‘He’s got a bright future in anything he decides to do, but he’s a massive fan of what we do, and I am a massive fan, as well all are, of what he can bring to the table here,’ he said.

‘And if he does make the decision to come here and want to become a WWE Superstar then I have no doubt he will do it, do it in record time and be amazing at it.’
