Shadow and Bone arrived as one of the most intriguing fantasy series on Netflix earlier this year, and now a boss on the show has given fans an update ahead of season 2.

The fantasy drama, featuring a strong cast including Jessie Mei Li, Luke Pasqualino, Archie Renaux and Zoe Wanamaker, dropped on the streaming platform earlier this year, and was dubbed the ‘next Game of Thrones’ by some – with critics raving about the new series and Metro.co.uk giving it four stars.

The show, an adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s YA book series, follows Alina Starkov (Jessie), as she’s recruited to become a soldier in an elite magical army, known as Grisha.

The show was renewed for more episodes not long after it arrived and now Shawn Levy, an executive producer on the drama, has given an update.

Speaking to Collider, Shawn confirmed that the scripts for the show had been written and that the drama is expected to go into production very soon.

He said: ‘Scripts written, heading into production shortly, in great shape, very much favorable to the characters in the world that we built and the Grishaverse that was put on screen in season one. But building out from there.

‘Eric Heisserer still at the helm as creator, showrunner and getting kind of dangerously close to heading into production,’ he said.

Shadow and Bone was renewed for a second season back in June. As well as lead actress Jessie, Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, Kit Young, Danielle Galligan, Calahan Skogman, and Ben Barnes are all set to return.

Executive producer and showrunner Eric Heisserer said in a statement: ‘I’m honoured and thrilled to return to the Grishaverse and continue the stories of these endearing characters, particularly Milo.’

Bardugo noted how exciting it will be to see more characters introduced to the audience.

The author added: ‘I’ve been writing in the Grishaverse for nearly 10 years now, so I’m thrilled we get to keep this adventure going.

‘There are so many places we’ve barely gotten to visit and I can’t wait to introduce our audience to more of the saints, soldiers, thugs, thieves, princes and privateers who make this world so much fun to explore.

‘It’s going to be real magic to see our brilliant, talented cast expand.’

Shadow and Bone season one is available on Netflix.
