Supergirl star Melissa Benoist has paid homage to the show as season 6 wraps filming, expressing her gratitude towards the cast, crew and fans who have followed the series for the past six years.

In September last year, it was announced that Supergirl, which stars Melissa as the titular character, would be drawing to a close with its sixth and final season.

Melissa, 32, promised to deliver ‘one helluva final season’, with the first episode of the show’s last outing – which will consist of 20 episodes – launching in March this year.

After a brief hiatus, with the seventh episode airing on May 11, the season is set to resume with the eighth episode on August 24.

In an Instagram post, Melissa confirmed that the season had officially wrapped, sharing a picture of herself on set with her co-stars Chyler Leigh and David Harewood.

‘Thank you for an incredible 6 years – the cast who became family, everyone who worked on the show, all of you who watched us week after week. That’s a wrap on @supergirlcw,’ she wrote in the caption.

In the photo, all three of the actors were dressed in costume, Chyler as Alex Danvers, David as J’onn J’onzz and Melissa as Kara Danvers.

Several Instagram users congratulated Melissa on the impressive six-season run of Supergirl, with one person thanking the actor for ‘spreading Kara’s message of hope and compassion with the world’.

‘I’m so proud of you and your journey, your portrayal of Kara was special, inspiring and remarkable. You are my real life hero and will always be my Supergirl,’ they said.

‘So happy to have had this show in my life! Look forward to it every week! It helped me through the bad times and I watched during the good times!’ another commented.

Someone else shared their hope that Melissa will reprise the role in other shows in the Arrowverse in future, having previously made appearances in The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman.

Season six of Supergirl continues on Tuesday August 24 on The CW in the US.
