With a few weeks to go until season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale comes to an end in the UK, it has emerged that season 5 of the dystopian series could mark its final outing.

In December 2020, it was announced that the show, which is based on the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, had been renewed for a fifth season.

While it’s unknown exactly when the drama will draw to a close, Jordan Helman, head of scripted originals at Hulu, has revealed that the team behind the series is in ‘constant communication’ over how it can end in a way that ‘feels organic’.

Jordan explained that the success of The Handmaid’s Tale ‘remains paramount for us’ at Hulu, stating that he believes they will decide on how it will conclude ‘in the coming months’.

Speaking to Deadline, he said: ‘What is also most important to us is that we close out that show in creative fashion that feels organic so we are in constant communication, literally right now, talking with Bruce [Miller], Lizzie [Moss] and Warren [Littlefield], about what the best way to end The Handmaid’s Tale is.

‘We haven’t landed on an answer… I imagine we’re going to be able to answer that question in the coming months.’

In September 2019, it was announced that a sequel spin-off series based on Margaret’s follow-up book The Testaments is in the works, which is set 15 years after The Handmaid’s Tale novel.

Jordan outlined how the end of The Handmaid’s Tale TV series and the development of The Testament are closely linked.

‘The birth of The Testaments on Hulu and the eventual end of The Handmaid’s Tale are related, we’re figuring out that as we speak,’ he said.

He added that whenever The Handmaid’s Tale does end, he has the ‘utmost confidence’ that it will have an ‘appropriate ending’.

In season four of The Handmaid’s Tale, June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) has finally made it to Canada, where her husband Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle) has been waiting for her.

In addition to reuniting with her best friend Moira Strand (Samira Wiley) and fellow former Handmaid Emily Malek (Alexis Bledel), June is still on her mission to rescue her daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake) from Gilead.

Considering the significant roles June’s two daughters play in The Testaments novel, it will be intriguing to see how their stories play out in the fifth – and possibly final – season.

The Handmaid’s Tale returns on Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4 and is available to watch on All 4.
