WWE SmackDown results, grades: Roman Reigns and The Usos destroy Finn Balor

WWE SmackDown ended on a bombshell this week as The Usos and Roman Reigns took out Finn Balor.

The first ever Universal Champion put up a fight against the Bloodline but the numbers game proved too much as he was on he receiving end of a beatdown to bring Friday night’s show to a close.

Balor looked like a star, first beating Baron Corbin in the main event of the blue brand with a decisive win.

Corbin, without music, tried to get himself out of the match because of his recent downturn in fortunes, but Finn wanted revenge after the former king’s involvement cost him a title showdown with Reigns at SummerSlam.

After his victory, Balor set his sights on John Cena – who signed his contract for a Universal Title shot last week – and insisted he’d run through the legendary star to get to the Tribal Chief.

The Head of the Table himself came down to the ring and refused to acknowledge Finn, who immediately shoved his rival out of the ring and sparked a brawl.

The Usos leaped to Roman’s defence, although Jimmy and Jey had their work cut out as Balor fought back and took them both down before hitting Reigns with a Sling Blade.

However, the Bloodline regrouped and were able to regroup as they took out Balor with Reigns taking control with the guillotine to leave his potential challenger lying on the mat.

Seth Rollins and Edge make SummerSlam match official and Bianca Belair beats Zelina Vega

SmackDown kicked off this week with Sasha Banks coming out with some strong words for Bianca Belair.

The Legit Boss – who returned last week and betrayed the EST of WWE by the end of the night – accused Belair of leaching off her name value, although the Women’s Champion came out to dismiss her claims.

Zelina Vega interrupted and wanted an opportunity, which led to a Championship Contender match later in the night, while Belair and Banks is official for SummerSlam.

The opening match of the night saw Dominik Mysterio take on Jey Uso in a fun match with a good underlying story as Rey pushes his son more and more.

In the end, it was the legendary masked luchador who cost his son the match as he took out Jimmy as ringside just as Dominik was set to win, but the distraction allowed Jey to score a big win.

Intercontinental Champion Apollo Crews face Shinsuke Nakamura in other contenders match as the new king looked strong before Commander Azeez broke up a pin to cause a DQ ending.

Nakamura ended on a high though, and stood tall to end the segment – which places him in a prime spot to challenge Crews for the gold at SummerSlam.

Shotzi’s missile proved the difference (Photo: WWE)

Tegan Nox picked up a win on Tamina, which came in an all-too-brief match after Shotzi Blackheart shot a missile from her tank to give her partner the opening she needed.

Edge came out and ranted about last week’s attack from Seth Rollins, and the Rated R Superstar admitted he was glad the SmackDown Saviour wasn’t in the arena because if he was, he’d be in jail.

Rollins did appear on the show via satellite as he shrugged off Edge’s strong words and insisted he’s simply ‘think about’ the challenge for SummerSlam.

However, the Ultimate Opportunist had a trick up his sleeve as he branded Seth ‘Edge-lite’, which was enough to make him accept the challenge to set up a massive first-time match in Las Vegas on August 21.

The Street Profits picked up some momentum as they enjoyed a decisive victory over Dolph Ziggler and Bobby Roode,

The final match of the evening saw Belair and Vega battle without the SmackDown Women’s Title on the line.

They delivered an entertaining match that showcased the champion nicely, and she rightly picked up the win with the KOD as the real story is her WrestleMania rematch against Sasha Banks at SummerSlam.
