“One Doubles Match”: Grigor Dimitrov to Roger Federer on His 40th Birthday

The 20-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, turned 40 today. With ‘Happy Birthday’ wishes pouring in from his millions of fans on social media platforms, Grigor Dimitrov made a heartfelt request to the Swiss Maestro while wishing him a happy birthday.

Having turned pro in 1998, Federer’s longevity has been extraordinary. Over the last two decades, Federer has mesmerized the world with his dazzling shot-making, astounding success, and most important, his humbleness to a fault, which has made him one of the most popular athletes of the 21st century.

Grigor Dimitrov makes a wish to Roger Federer

In a short video, the Bulgarian tennis player, Dimitrov, sent his heartiest wishes to Federer on his 40th birthday. The World No.21 mentioned he is hoping for Federer to return on the tour and desires to compete against him a few more times.

In the end, Dimitrov just like any other Federer fan requested the Swiss Maestro to play a doubles match alongside him before the veteran retires.

“Hi Rog, happy birthday. I wanted to wish you a very amazing day. Hope to see you soon back on the court. Hope we get to play a couple of more battles. And please, once before you retire, one doubles match with me on my side of the net. Have a good one pal,” said Dimitrov.

Federer is the only 40-year-old ranked in the ATP Top-100. In fact, he has remained in the top-100 since October 1999, which makes it an astonishing 21-year streak and counting.

Having last played in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, Federer skipped the Tokyo Olympics because of a knee injury. In addition, he has withdrawn from the upcoming Canadian Masters and Cincinnati Open, which cast doubts over his US Open participation.

Knowing Federer is in the last stages of his career, any match which he plays from now onwards would be in celebration of a career of one of the greatest players of all time, without whom the fans cannot imagine tennis. Happy Birthday Roger, wishing you a speedy recovery!
