VIDEO: Megan Rapinoe’s New ‘Olympico’ Goal Turns Heads at Tokyo Olympics 2020

The USWNT’s journey so far has been excellent. After a decade long of pure dominance, this football team has reached its end as they lost to Canada in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 football matches. However, the women’s soccer team won the bronze medal in a stunning match against Australia that may signal the end of an era. The game finished 4-3 as Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd scored a brace.

But the talking point of the game would be Rapinoe’s ‘Olympico’ goal that she scored during the match. Rapinoe scored directly from a corner to send the USA home with the victory. But what is an ‘Olympico’ goal?

What is an ‘Olympico’ goal?

One name associated with the goal is David Beckham. Beckham mastered the ability to bend the ball from a dead-ball situation ever since he started playing football. However, to score a goal directly from a corner kick takes some skill. Players usually take corners hoping to find a player on the receiving end of it in the penalty box.

Rapinoe got behind the ball with seven minutes on the clock and whipped it into the penalty area. To everyone’s surprise, the ball went directly into the net. The sheer talent and ability it takes to hit a goal like that speaks volumes about her technical ability.

This goal is called the Olympico goal. “Gol Olímpico” made its debut in the football fraternity after Argentinian soccer player Cesáreo Onzari scored a similar goal in 1924. For such a tag to accompany a goal, a player kicks the ball intending to curve the ball right into the net. A perfect angle and the sheer audacity to take the shot makes it an iconic goal in many people’s eyes.

Notably, French Legend Thierry Henry scored a goal for New York Red Bulls during his time there.

This is not the first time that Rapinoe has scored an ‘Olympico’ goal. During the 2012 London Olympic Games, she scored a similar goal during their match against England. It was a terrific attempt, as she became the first player to score an ‘Olympico’ goal in the Olympics. Staggering.

Rapinoe also scored a spectacular goal as well. A fantastic volley inside the box cemented her legacy as one of the greatest soccer players in the world. The brilliant left-winger once again proved her technical ability is far better than anyone else.

After receiving the ball inside the box, she hit a first-time volley to shock the Australian goalkeeper.

But the conclusion comes to whether her career is done. The 36-year-old American has won every competition available to her. There are rumors of retirement lingering away as Megan Rapinoe has had a sensational career and won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
