Spence started off his career at 15  under the guidance of his father. Since then, he has had 77 amateur bouts, out of which he won 64 (no knockouts) and also incurred 13 losses (no knockouts). Before beginning his pro boxing career, he also won the 147-pound title at the 2012 U.S. Olympic trials before losing in the quarterfinals at the London Games.

Is Errol Spence Jr a knockout artist?

Compared to Terence Crawford and Manny Pacquiao, Errol Spence Jr is taller and has a longer reach as well. Naturally, the 31-year-old likes to use his height and reach to his advantage in fights. While he has an impressive pro boxing knockout record, he outscored his opponents throughout his amateur career.

Errol Spence Jr. usually likes to gauge and maintain enough distance between himself and his opponents at all times. His fight reels show that he does not like to fight inside the pocket and prefers fighting from the outside. Maintaining distance throughout the fight allows Spence to keep landing effective jabs and hooks to the body.

His opponents risk getting clipped with an uppercut or a hook while trying to close in and fight from inside the pocket. Spence’s height and reach advantage make closing the distance an ordeal for his opponents. Since the opposite corner cannot close in, the WBC and IBF welterweight champion often end up out-pointing his opponents by landing regular jabs.

Errol Spence Jr. is an extremely skillful fighter with excellent striking abilities, world-class movement, and footwork. While he may not be a traditional knockout artist, he has a lot of tricks up his sleeves and knows his way around finishing his opponents as well.
