Dr Alex George has deleted his Twitter account in a bid to encourage people to protect their mental wellbeing with regards to social media.

The former Love Island star, 30, took action after growing to find the content on the site too negative.

The star asserted his right to distance himself and believes other should do the same if social media is not having a good impact on their lives.

Taking to Instagram on Monday to share a screenshot of his Twitter account’s deactivation page, he wrote: ‘I have decided to delete my @twitter account.

‘I believe we should all take the necessary steps to protect our mental well-being and be brave in creating boundaries where this could be affected.

‘I have not made this decision because I have been trolled. Most of what I see on that platform is negative and demotivating. Life is far too short.

‘Do not be afraid to take action to protect your mental health. You have that right.

‘Social media has incredible power for good if used correctly and I am so proud of the community we have here #CancelNegativity.’

Dr Alex, who is an A&E doctor and rose to fame on Love Island in 2018, recently opened up about his role on ITV’s mental health advisory board.

The reality star is also the broadcaster’s Ambassador for Mental Health, a position that involves advising the government on young people’s mental well-being.

During an episode of Susannah Constantine’s podcast My Wardrobe Malfunction earlier this summer, he said: ‘I actually sit on the board now the mental health board advisory board for ITV.

‘A lot of the thoughts now moving forward are around how can we promote better mental well-being not just on [Love Island] but for people watching it.’

Dr Alex emphasised that TV and reality programmes ‘can actually have an impact on people’s mental health’, adding that this can happen ‘in a positive way’.

‘It’s considering who you’re putting on there. Are they prepared for that? What messages are we giving to people? Are we representing the body image, the diversity that we have in the UK on screen, you know, those kind of things,’ he stated.
