Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon paid her own university fees because she ‘doesn’t have everything given to her’

Lourdes Leon has revealed that she pays her own way, rather than asking her mum Madonna to cover costs – and that included her university fees.

The 24-year-old, who likes to carve out her own path, is the daughter of pop superstar Madonna, 62, and personal trainer turned actor Carlos Leon, 55.

Lourdes, who goes by the nickname Lola, is featured on the cover of Vogue’s September 2021 issue alongside seven other models.

Chatting about her independence to the publication, she said: ‘People think I’m this talentless rich kid who’s had everything given to her but I’m not.’

The model and dancer then shared that she paid for college ‘herself’ and lives in the Bushwick neighbourhood in New York City so she can ‘disappear into its polyglot creative community’.

Lourdes attended the famous LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, alongside ex-boyfriend Timothée Chalamet, before enrolling at the University of Michigan to study dance in 2014.

In the accompanying feature, which also includes Cindy Crawford’s daughter Kaia Gerber, Anok Yai, Precious Lee, Bella Hadid, Sherry Shi, Ariel Nicholson and Yumi Nu, all picked as models who are changing the industry, Lourdes also touched on the backlash to photos of her with unshaved armpits, to which she said: ‘Yeah, come at me, bro.’

Lourdes made her runway debut in 2018 and fronted a Marc Jacobs campaign earlier this year.

She has also starred in campaigns for Stella McCartney and been a brand ambassador for Miu Miu, Converse and more.

Despite only making her Instagram debut in January, the starlet has garnered hundreds of thousands of followers with her mix of fierce fashion posts and politics.

Madonna’s net worth is estimated to be around $550million (£397m) from a decades-long music and acting career, which has produced hits like Material Girl, Holiday and Hung Up.

The pop icon and Carlos were in a relationship from 1995 to 1997, with Lourdes born in October 1996, before Madonna went on to have Rocco, 20, with ex-husband Guy Ritchie, and adopt David, 15, Mercy, also 15, and eight-year-old twins Estere and Stelle.
