WWE agrees to let Chelsea Green wrestle under her real name after trademark row

Chelsea Green has revealed WWE aren’t looking to trademark her name, so she can use it elsewhere.

The 30-year-old wrestler, who has recently appeared on Ring of Honor, IMPACT Wrestling and some independent shows under her real name, had been caught in a potential legal battle over the rights.

She had initially referenced the issue on Twitter, as she wrote: ‘I never thought I’d be in a legal battle for my BIRTH GIVEN name… Going to discuss it on tomorrow’s episode of @GreenWEnvyPod (sic)’

However, this week’s edition of her podcast came and went with no mention of the drama, as Fightful Select reported that WWE would no longer be trying to trademark her moniker.

Chelsea has since confirmed to Metro.co.uk that the reason she didn’t delve into the situation after all is because now there’s ‘not much to talk about’.

‘Last night around 9pm I got a call from WWE saying they wouldn’t be pursuing trademarking my name,’ she added, noting that she received ‘nothing else’ in terms of details herself from the company.

According to Chelsea, there was some paperwork she had signed while she inked a new deal with the company before being released, but in the end this was pulled.

It comes after relations between Green and WWE seemed to be in a decent place after she recently debuted at Ring of Honor: Best In The World days before her 90-day noncompete clause was due to expire.

On July 11, she appeared and was confirmed as an entrant into their Women’s Championship Tournament, and she later revealed the company had agreed to end her noncompete early.

In another sign of goodwill, Chelsea previously explained how she had been training at the Performance Center after reinjuring her broken arm following her release from the promotion.

When it comes to using her real name in wrestling, she now appears to be free to do so, having used it initially when she was coming up on the independent scene.

After joining IMPACT Wrestling as Chelsea (no surname), she became Laurel Van Ness, and then took on the Reklusa name in Lucha Underground

She reverted back to her real name on the indie scene again before signing with WWE in 2018 and continuing under that moniker.
