Harry Styles reminisced on good times with his ol’ pal Nick Grimshaw in a sweet message to mark the presenter’s final show on BBC Radio 1.

Grimshaw, 36, is leaving the station after almost 14 years and began his last ever show, the drivetime slot, at 2pm on Thursday.

After a string of warm send-offs from celebrities and his colleagues, it seems the best was saved until last with Grimmy treated to a special farewell from Harry.

The pair became good friends in the early days of Harry’s career in One Direction and, clearly, the feelings are still mutual.

In a pre-recorded audio clip, the Watermelon Sugar singer said: ‘Hi Grimmy, it’s Harry. I cannot believe it’s your last week on Radio 1.

‘My favourite time being on Radio 1 with you was probably forming the Straight Through Crew and going straight in from the Brits. But also, every time that could have been so scary for me playing new music, it was always so nice for me to have a friend there and it always felt so safe.’

He concluded: ‘Thank you for being my favourite show on radio, thank you for being a friend and I miss you and I can’t wait to see you soon. Good luck with everything, I love you. Byeeee!’

Longtime Radio 1 listeners will recognise Harry’s anecdote as the night he and Grimmy partied hard after the Brit Awards in 2013 and hilariously turned up to the presenter’s breakfast show still drunk from the night before.

Grimmy recently reflected on the iconic moment and said: ‘I think it was a culturally relevant hangover. We all made it in, but my producers didn’t!

‘That’s why it sounded so mad – because both my producers were asleep on a different floor. It was absolute chaos.’

He continued: ‘It was so fun. When I’m out, I hate the party ending – I hate everyone having to go home. So I thought if I’ve got to go in, why don’t we make them come in?’

Grimmy will be replaced by Jordan North and Vick Hope from September, while he is planning to focus on TV work going forward.

He had announced at the end of June that he would be moving on from the station after 14 years.

The radio host told his followers at the time: ‘Some news I can finally share after giving it some thought for a while…. I have decided that after 14 years on air it’s time for me to leave Radio 1.

‘It was my childhood dream to work here and I have truly had the time of my life. But now is time for a change.

‘I want to thank you, the R1 listeners for joining me on this journey. Thank you for being a massive part of my life and sharing your lives with me on the radio every day.

‘Thank you for providing endless hilarity, passion and an unquenchable eagerness to ‘avvvvv it!’
