Nick Grimshaw has revealed he was almost late for his final show on BBC Radio 1 as he bowed out after 14 years on the station.

The presenter, 36, took to his Instagram story on his way in to Radio 1 to start his last show at 2pm on Thursday, revealing he was battling through traffic to make it on time.

Videoing himself in the back of a cab with a pair of sunglasses on, he told his followers: ‘I’m never late actually – people say I am but I am not – but I’m actually late today for the last show.

‘We’re on today from 2pm by the way, so the last show is 2pm on Radio 1. I should be there on time…’

Thankfully, Nick did just about manage to make it in on time for his final appearance on the station where he later revealed he had cried four times so far that day.

He admitted: ‘I’ve cried three times today. My boyfriend got me a really nice card, Caroline who I work with sent me a really nice message, that was cry number two. And, oh, I’ve cried four times. I cried in the Zoom and then when I played Magnetic Man I cried.’

Nick revealed that the while Radio 1 team had joined a Zoom call to bid him farewell, which he found emotional despite not being into nostalgia usually.

He explained: ‘We are here for my final show on Radio 1 and I feel the weirdest ever. It’s weird, we just did a Zoom with everyone from Radio 1, DJs producers everyone, first of all I was late, but it was emo, wasn’t it?’

Nick added: ‘I’m happy – not like “see ya!”, but it feels like the right thing to do, it feels exciting.

‘I don’t really like nostalgia, it makes me feel a bit sick and I have had to do that a lot, mainly to remember what the hell has gone on in the last 14 years and through that I have experienced a feeling I have never felt before, contentment.’

Nick’s long-time friend Harry Styles was one of the stars who sent him a message for the occasion, telling him: ‘Hi Grimmy, it’s Harry. I can not believe it’s your last week on Radio 1.

‘My favourite time being on Radio 1 with you was probably forming the Straight Through Crew and going straight in from the Brits.

‘But also, every time that could have been so scary for me playing new music, it was always so nice for me to have a friend there and it always felt so safe.

‘Thank you for being my favourite show on radio, thank you for being a friend and I miss you and I can’t wait to see you soon. Good luck with everything, I love you. Byeeee!’

Nick will be replaced by Jordan North and Vick Hope from September, while he is planning to focus on TV work going forward.

He had announced at the end of June that he would be moving on from the station after 14 years.

Nick told his followers at the time: ‘Some news I can finally share after giving it some thought for a while…. I have decided that after 14 years on air it’s time for me to leave Radio 1.

‘It was my childhood dream to work here and I have truly had the time of my life. But now is time for a change.
