Richard Bacon is set to return to Good Morning Britain as a guest presenter, becoming the latest host to step in following Piers Morgan’s departure from the ITV programme earlier this year.

Since Piers’ dramatic exit from GMB in March, which occurred after he criticised comments Meghan Markle made about her mental health during her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, several broadcasters have taken his place on the show.

Guest presenters over the past few months have included Alastair Campbell, Adil Ray and Richard Madeley, with journalist Richard Bacon now set to step up to the mark next.

Richard will present on the show from Wednesday August 18 for four days until Monday August 23, hosting alongside Charlotte Hawkins on Wednesday, Kate Garraway on Thursday and Friday and Ranvir Singh on the Monday.

Speaking about his appointment, Richard, 45, said that returning to presenting on British breakfast TV ‘feels like coming home’.

‘Not only am I coming home to London to guest present Good Morning Britain this month, but being back on British breakfast broadcasting feels like coming home also,’ he said.

‘I can’t wait to see the team again and am very much looking forward to my time on the show with Kate, Ranvir and Charlotte.”

Neil Thompson, editor of GMB, praised the combination of presenters the programme has had in recent months.

‘Our mix of guest hosts on Good Morning Britain alongside our brilliant existing family of presenters has been a great success over recent months, and brings a diverse range of perspectives on the day’s news agenda. We’re delighted that Richard can return to join us this summer,’ he said.

This won’t be the first time that Richard has guest hosted GMB, as he had a short stint presenting on the news show in 2019.

When Richard filled in for Piers two years ago, the occasion marked a year since he had been placed in a coma for six days after suffering from pneumonia in both of his lungs.

The broadcaster welcomed two doctors who helped save his life onto the show, with Richard saying: ‘It’s really wonderful and moving for me to see you today. I know it seems like such a futile statement, but I’m going to say it anyway, thank you for saving my life.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and ITV Hub.
