Lionel Messi Missed Out on One of the Biggest Records in History After Leaving FC Barcelona

Messi’s departure from FC Barcelona was tragic for all Barcelona fans. However, PSG fans will be ecstatic, for they have now acquired one of the greatest players of all time for free. Lionel Messi could be the catalyst for them winning their first UEFA Champions League.

But PSG fans aren’t the only ones rejoicing, as Messi’s early departure means that he has now failed to beat several major records at Barcelona. The biggest record that he was close to beating was winning the most trophies at a football club.

Messi ended his career with 35 trophies for FC Barcelona and ended up coming second, which means Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs retains his top spot with the 36 trophies he won under Sir Alex Ferguson. It’s an unreal haul, and it’s hard to see any player breaking it any time soon.

He also came joint second in the record for the most La Liga titles. While Real Madrid legend Paco Gento had 12, Messi is tied with Gento’s Real Madrid teammate Pirri with 10 La Liga titles each.

If Messi had stayed at Barcelona this season, he would’ve become the player with the most Champions League appearances for the Spanish club. His former teammate Xavi Hernandez holds the record with 151 matches played while Messi ended up with 149.

However, the Argentinian forward could still return to Barcelona in the swansong of his career. He’ll definitely beat the record if he returns, but it’s hard to imagine him playing for Spain again.

The records Lionel Messi has at FC Barcelona.

Lionel Messi established himself as the greatest player of all time in Barcelona with his incredible performances for over 15 years. He is also the club’s most-capped player with 778 matches. In addition to that, Messi is their all-time highest goalscorer with 670 goals to his name.

He also holds the record for winning the Ballon d’Or the most times with six trophies under his belt and is likely going to get his seventh soon. Only Cristiano Ronaldo comes close with his five Ballon d’Ors.

It’ll be interesting to see how Messi fares at his new club with this PSG squad.
