Singer Tony Bennett has retired from performing, his son and long time manager Danny Bennett has said.

The jazz icon, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2016, had been due to kick off his rescheduled tour this year.

However his short casino tour is no longer going ahead as the star walks away from concerts altogether to prioritise his health.

Danny told Variety it was ‘a hard decision for us to make’ as his father is ‘a capable performer’.

He continued: ‘This is, however, doctors’ orders. His continued health is the most important part of this, and when we heard the doctors – when Tony’s wife, Susan heard them – she said, “Absolutely not.”

‘He’ll be doing other things, but not those upcoming shows. It’s not the singing aspect but, rather, the traveling. Look, he gets tired. The decision is being made that doing concerts now is just too much for him.

‘We don’t want him to fall on stage, for instance – something as simple as that.’

Danny, 66, added: ‘The decision is being made that doing concerts now is just too much for him.

‘We don’t want him to fall on stage, for instance — something as simple as that.

‘We’re not worried about him being able to sing. We are worried, from a physical stand point… about human nature. Tony’s 95.’

The singer was due to appear in Connecticut on September 25, with three further dates in October and two in December, ending in Oklahoma on December 18.

Tony recently announced his second collaboration album with Lady Gaga, Love For Sale, and the pair performed two shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York last week.
