AEW Rampage: Christian Cage wins IMPACT Wrestling World Championship from Kenny Omega

It just looks right (Picture: AEW)

Christian Cage beat Kenny Omega for the IMPACT Wrestling World Championship in the opening match of AEW Rampage.

That sentence alone shows how amazing the wrestling world is in 2021, with Cage’s fairy tale return – which started with that in-ring reunion with Edge at the Royal Rumble with January – culminating in a genuinely heart-warming moment.

Instant Classic last appeared for IMPACT back in the TNA days with his final appearance coming in 2008, besides a one-off non-wrestling return in 2012, and now he’s set to be part of the promotion’s tapings next week with all the gold.

He faced Omega in the first match of Rampage’s highly anticipated debut episode in what was undoubtedly the biggest match of his unexpected in-ring comeback thus far.

Cage more than delivered here, showing amazing chemistry with the AEW and AAA Champion en route to an unexpected but richly deserved victory.

Don Callis and the Young Bucks couldn’t help Omega secure the win, and Christian eventually hit the Killswitch onto an upright steel chair to secure the win and the title.

Now, he’s set to clash with the most professional wrestler, Brian Myers, on August 20 at IMPACT’s Emergence show.

Elsewhere on Friday night’s Rampage, Miro made quick work of Fuego Del Sol to retain the TNT Title.

And the latter was clearly overcome with emotion when Tony Khan and Sammy Guevara came out to reveal he was still being signed despite not winning the match.

In the main event, Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. got a great hometown welcome in Pittsburgh as she successfully defended her Women’s Title against Red Velvet.

She eventually picked up the win with the Lockjaw, and Kris Statlander stopped her from dishing out further punishment after the bell as she looked to stomp Velvet into the title belt.

However, Jamie Hayter made her AEW comeback and helped Baker take them both out to close the show.
