Singer Lorde has declared there’s ‘definitely not a smash’ hit record on her new album Solar Power, as she revealed she’s ‘under no illusion’ Royals was ‘a moonshot’.

The New Zealand songstress, 24, hit number one with Royals in the UK, US, Canada and her home country, and scooped two Grammys with the single from her platinum-certified debut album, Pure Heroine.

The singer songwriter, real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor, is realistic at her prospects of matching its success again.

Speaking to The New York Times, she said: ‘There’s definitely not a smash. It makes sense that there wouldn’t be a smash, because I don’t even know really what the smashes are now.’

Lorde has also promised herself not to work under the pressure of trying to repeat the success of Royals.

‘What a lost cause. Can you imagine? I’m under no illusion. That was a moonshot,’ she reflected.

Between Pure Herione and her second album, 2017’s Melodrama, which clocked another Grammy nomination, Lorde took a four-year break, and she’s done the same again ahead of Solar Power, which will be released on August 20.

The singer, who said she simply ‘went back to living my life’ during her break, and admitted she had been drained, shared that it seemed ‘hard for people to understand’ that she opted to take hiatuses.

She explained: ‘The question I’ve gotten a lot recently is, “What have you been doing?”

‘I’m like, “Oh, no, no, no — this is a break from my life”. I come back and perform these duties because I believe in the album.’

Lorde recently revealed that Harry Styles is her top choice when it comes to potential future collaborations, sharing her pick in an interview with Vogue for the magazine’s 73 Questions series.

When asked which artists she’d like to work with, she replied: ‘I kinda wanna talk to Harry Styles.’

The format of the interview doesn’t allow for much expansion, but that message is now sent out into the universe, if Harry’s listening.

Solar Power is out on 20 August.
