Ellie Goulding has revealed her baby came as a surprise as being a mother wasn’t one of her original life goals.
The singer, 34, welcomed her son Arthur in April this year with husband Caspar Jopling, but it appears that having a little one wasn’t always in the plan.
Speaking to You Magazine, Ellie revealed that she took a pregnancy test during a road trip to Italy, which Caspar booked to celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary, and seeing two blue lines came as a bit of a shock.
She admitted that, before falling pregnant, she wasn’t sure she wanted to be a mother.
‘I was always great with other people’s kids,’ she said.
‘But becoming a mother wasn’t necessarily one of my goals. After we got married, people kept asking when we were going to have kids, and I would say, “I don’t know if I will. I really love my job. I love my life. I love my freedom.”‘

However, the music star added that motherhood has come ‘really naturally’ to her.
‘I’ve never felt any disconnect or confusion about what I’m doing.’
She previously said, of having a baby, that ‘becoming pregnant kind of made me feel human’.
Ellie is now releasing a book titled Fitter. Calmer. Stronger, packed with fitness and diet advice thanks to the help of trainers, nutritionists and doctors, written weeks after giving birth.

She said the focus of her book came after years of fixating on exercise and having a poor diet on tour, as well as sleep deprivation and having ‘debilitating’ panic attacks.
She told the magazine, however, that she was ‘in two minds about writing it,’ before deciding that she had ‘found a good balance between my job and my lifestyle.’

Ellie, best known for hits including Burn and Love Me Like You Do, tied the knot with art dealer Caspar in August 2019.
She fell pregnant last year and, partly due to lockdown, kept the pregnancy a secret before unveiling it in Vogue magazine at 30 weeks.
