Matthew MacNabb teared up on Aftersun when reflecting on his time with fellow islanders in the Love Island villa.

Matt, who is the most recent dumped contestant on the show following Priya Gopaldas’s decision to couple up with new bombshell Brett Staniland after just one day, was close to tears as he spoke about saying farewell to his pals.

He admitted: ‘I’m overwhelmed with my emotions right now and it’s hard putting it into words but, overall, I would say I’m proud. I’ve just been myself.’

As he went to speak about his friendships, he revealed the ‘toughest part’ was leaving that behind.

‘I choke a little on my words because saying goodbye to my fellow islanders – there my family in there and I love those guys, so that’s the toughest but for me,’ he said.

Matt then became visibly overwhelmed and requested ‘two minutes’ as he walked away from the camera to compose himself.

Returning to the interview, Matt then declared that he had ‘no regrets leaving the villa’ and that he was ‘proud of everything I’ve done’.

Speaking to Love Island and Aftersun host Laura Whitmore live on the show afterward, Matt ruefully admitted that he was still ‘very sad’.

He did joke things had already gone a bit crazy though, as the pilot on his flight home to Northern Ireland wanted a picture with him.

‘I’m just a normal guy from Downpatrick,’ he laughed.

The 26-year-old strategic marketing consultant wasn’t sad to leave his love triangles behind though, describing his initial entanglement with Kaz and Tyler as ‘pretty terrible on me’.

‘I felt a lot of emotions in there. It wasn’t nice, but it’s over with and I love and respect both of them.’

However, there’s still potentially some unfinished business for Matt when it comes to Priya, as he admitted he still felt ‘there was a lot there’.

When asked to list what attracted him, Matt said: ‘Honestly it was her ambitiousness, her spontaneity. She had so much going for her, we had so much in common.

‘She loved travel and, big thing for me, she was really independent.

‘There was a lot there and, hmm… it’s annoying!’

Well, with Priya having branded Brett ‘boring’ to the other girls during their date on Sunday’s episode of Love Island, and the Islanders being forced to vote for the two least compatible couples, perhaps the stars are aligning for them to give it another shot?

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
