It’s no secret Louise Minchin is leaving BBC Breakfast but there is plenty of uncertainty around who will be replacing her.

On June 8, the presenter announced she would be stepping down from her regular role on the morning show alongside Dan Walker.

Minchin confirmed to viewers it was time to stop setting her alarm for 3.40am and suggested she would be leaving ‘some time after the summer’.

The 52-year-old’s exact leaving date is yet to be confirmed and it’s also unclear if the BBC will draft in someone to join regulars Walker, Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty or if there will be a complete overhaul of the presenting lineup.

That hasn’t stopped several high-profile names being mentioned as potential candidates to replace her later in the year though.

As we wait for official word, let’s take a look at who could be in the running.

Piers Morgan

Having sensationally quit rival show Good Morning Britain earlier this year, Morgan is yet to return to a regular TV role.

He has plenty of experience presenting morning TV but his rivalry with Walker over viewing figures in the past could prove a problem.

After Minchin revealed she was leaving, Morgan tweeted Walker: ‘Stop blubbing Dan – I start Monday.

‘BBC wanted the guy who beat you in the ratings, and the first same-sex male breakfast presenting team to appease the wokies.’

Eamonn Holmes

A regular on our TV screens, Holmes has presented across ITV and Sky News in the past including ITV’s previous breakfast show GMTV in the 90s and early 00s.

He currently presents This Morning with his wife Ruth Langsford.

Sally Nugent

The journalist and newsreader has been working on BBC Breakfast on a freelance basis since November 2011.

She is among the favourites to replace Minchin having previously stepped into her role when the latter was off in December 2020.

Nugent has also presented the sport bulletins on the show since 2012 and currently serves as the show’s main relief presenter.

Bill Turnbull

The veteran news presenter formerly worked with Minchin during his spell on the BBC Breakfast show between 2001 and 2016.

He stepped down from his role and was later diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018.

Turnbull is currently a presenter on radio station Classic FM but would likely be popular option if he came back to TV presenting.
