“I Just Had This Goal in My Mind…”: Taylor Fritz Reflects on His Recovery After Knee Surgery

Taylor Fritz has shown great strength and determination in his pursuit of success on the court. The American tennis star suffered a knee injury in June during his French Open second-round game. However, he is not willing to go down without a fight and has shown signs of great recovery after a successful surgery.

Fritz tore his meniscus in the right knee during his second-round loss against Dominik Koepfer. He had to get a surgery done after leaving Paris. His comeback was unreal as he was back on the court at the All England Club, fighting at the Wimbledon Championships.

Taylor Fritz talks about his knee surgery and subsequent comeback

A torn meniscus can take time to heal, especially in a professional tennis player’s case. However, Taylor Fritz is clearly built differently, as he was back on court within a month of the injury. The World No. 42 went on to play at the Wimbledon Championships and then started his North American tour but has not really tasted success at any of the tournaments.

I tore my meniscus, so I needed an arthroscopic surgery where they just kind of go in, two incisions in the knee. We didn’t know at that time if we were going to be able to snip the meniscus, the part that I kind of like tore out, or I would have to do a full repair,” said Fritz regarding his injury.

His doctor gave him good news after the MRI scan; it was possible for him to come back in just four weeks. “My surgeon did a really good job. I just had this goal in my mind that I want to play Wimbledon. It would be so crazy if I could just come back for Wimbledon and so I just, I don’t know, I was just able to do it,” said Fritz.

His hunger turned into reality and he made it till the third round at the Wimbledon Championships. He faced Alexander Zverev in the third round and eventually lost in four sets.

Fritz faces unfortunate defeat

Taylor Fritz was excited about playing at the Cincinnati Open. “Cincinnati has such a good fan base out here. Like every year there are so many fans that come out, they are so into it, they love the tennis. I love coming out here and being with the fans and it’s just like my own little tennis spot out here with this amazing facility and it’s just something different,” said Fritz.

Taylor suffered an unfortunate defeat in the opening round as he went down to Albert Ramos-Vinolas. After a decent effort in the first set, Taylor lost the following two sets and crashed out of Cincinnati. He lost 6-4, 4-6, 4-6 and will now start preparing for the US Open soon.
