Piers Morgan has his eye on beating Ant and Dec at the National Television Awards next month.

The former Good Morning Britain host has been tipped for best TV presenter at the NTAs  – something his old colleagues made light of earlier today.

Unfortunately, the 56-year-old is up against Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly for the gong, with the duo taking home the prize for the last 19 years.

That’s definitely some record…

In true Piers style, he’s convinced that he can end their reign, and has asked his Twitter followers to join in the votes.

‘For 19 consecutive years, @antanddec have won TV Presenter of the Year at @OfficialNTAs,’ he said of the nomination.

It’s been as annoying as it’s been bloody boring.
Now, you can finally end the tediously predictable carve-up & choose a more deserving winner: Me.

Ant and Dec aren’t the only big names he has to overcome, as Bradley Walsh and This Morning stars Holly Willoughby and Alison Hammond are also mentioned in the category.

Earlier in the day, the ITV star couldn’t help but make a thinly veiled swipe at Meghan Markle as he celebrated the nomination.

Piers left Good Morning Britain in March (Picture: ITV)

The Life Stories host left GMB in March after he sparked a huge backlash over his comments about the Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which he doubted that she considered suicide at the height of racist abuse.

The rant prompted an outcry, with more than 54,000 complaints lodged with Ofcom.

Recalling the irony of his nomination after his exit, he tweeted: ‘Most amused to finally be nominated for TV Presenter of the Year at the @OfficialNTAs.

‘Though could be a tad #awks for ITV if I win for my work on @GMB. Might have to pull a Brando and send Princess Pinocchio along to receive it on my behalf….’

We’ll see if Piers needs any help in accepting the award in the next few weeks…

The National Television Awards, hosted by Joel Dommett, will take place in London on September 9.
