Dominic Thiem in Turmoil As He Crashes Out of Top-10 ATP Rankings

Ahead of the US Open 2021, bombshells are being dropped practically everyday. In the latest edition of unfortunate news, defending champion Dominic Thiem announced that he will be missing the rest of the season. The news comes after Thiem suffered a wrist injury ahead of Wimbledon. It has left his fans in a state of distraught and despondence. His withdrawal means that another piece of bad news is coming his way.

There is no doubt in saying that 2021 has not been the best of years for Thiem. After reaching the Australian Open final in 2020, he failed to make merry this year. Even at the French Open, the Austrian was defeated in the first round. Therefore, he was already lagging behind when it came to the season’s points. And now, having missed the grass swing and the season to come, there is more disappointment coming Thiem’s way.

The 2020 US Open winner’s wrist has been giving him continuous problems. This means that he will be cutting his campaign short, and losing out on vital points. The crucial loss will be that of the US Open where he was bound to defend 2000 points, and the ATP Tour Finals. The injury will see the Dominic drop outside of the top-10 in the men’s singles rankings soon. The last time Thiem was ranked outside the world’s top-10 was way back in 2016.

What exactly happened to the Austrian?

In the build-up to Wimbledon, Thiem was taking part in the Mallorca Open 2021. Leading 5-2 against Adrian Mannarino of France, the former World No.3 cited a pain in his wrist and retired. He was never the same after, as the pain he felt was in fact an injury that would keep him out for weeks.

“Tests have found that there is a detachment of the posterior sheath of the ulnar side of the right wrist,” wrote the player after taking his hiatus. He was however, gradually returning to training ahead of his title defense at Flushing Meadows. In a last-minute decision, medics advised the star not to rush his return, ending his 2021 season.

Nonetheless, we all wish Dominic Thiem a speedy recovery. Tennis needs such a superstar, and we all hope to see back soon. If he can recover in time, perhaps a glorious comeback at the Australian Open 2022 is loading!
