APPLE is nearly ready to unveil the new iPhone 13 – but what is it and when is it out?

What is the iPhone 13?

Like clockwork, Apple launches a new iPhone (or four) every year.

Last year Apple introduced the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

And this year we’re expecting the iPhone 13 – along with various spin-offs.

Apple hasn’t publicly confirmed the iPhone 13 yet, but it would be a total shock if the firm didn’t unveil it this September.

iPhone 13 release date – when is it out?

Apple is a creature of habit, sticking to an obvious pattern for iPhone releases each year.

The big launch event always takes place in September, and generally falls early on in the month – on a Tuesday or Wednesday, typically.

This year, we’d expect Apple to unveil the iPhone 13 on Tuesday, September 14 or Wednesday, September 15.

Pre-orders will probably become available on Friday, September 17.

And the actual release date will most likely fall on Friday, September 24.

Of course, Apple could change its tack this year and completely surprise us.

iPhone 13 news and rumours – what to expect

We don’t know much about the iPhone 13 for certain.

But as the launch draws near, the quality and quantity of leaks increases.

And we can already make some educated guesses about the handset too.

It’s extremely likely to support 5G – like last year’s roster of iPhones.

You can also expect to see a new A15 Apple processor, and even the possible return of Touch ID.

The firm abandoned Touch ID in favour of the mug-scanning Face ID with the iPhone X back in 2017.

It meant that Apple could fit bigger screens to the iPhone – by removing the Home button.

But now the wearing of face masks is so widespread, Face ID is less useful than it used to be.

More expensive versions of the iPhone could get a souped-up fingerprint scanner later this year.

However, it’s looking more likely that this will be featured in 2022 rather than 2021.

Importantly, this new version of Touch ID wouldn’t require a Home button.

Instead it would be built into the screen, hidden below the display.

This means Apple could still fit a giant screen to the iPhone – just like all iPhone X-style handsets to date.

Apple wouldn’t be the first to do this of course: rival firms Samsung and Huawei have both offered in-screen fingerprint scanners for a while now.

iPhone 13 price – how much will it cost?

We simply don’t know the iPhone 13 price yet – and won’t know for sure until the launch day.

But we’d expect Apple to stay fairly close to the pricing we’ve seen on 2020 models.

To recap, that’s:

iPhone 12 mini – £699 / $99iPhone 12 – £799 / $799iPhone 12 Pro – £999 / $999iPhone 12 Pro Max – £1,099 / $1,099

We’d expect that Apple will stick to around £50/$50 of these prices for 2021.

iPhone 13 name – will the moniker be scrapped?

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman thinks Apple may steer away from the number 13 because it’s unlucky in many countries.

He noted in his “Power On” email newsletter that Apple also didn’t bring out an iPhone 9 and instead went straight for the iPhone X.

The number nine is actually considered to be unlucky in China.

However, 13 is considered a lucky number in the country.

The iPhone X (the roman numeral for 10) supposedly got its name because the launch coincided with the 10 year anniversary of Apple’s first iPhone and not because of any superstitions.

Apple has never actually claimed to purposefully avoid numbering iPhones based on superstitions.

That hasn’t stopped analysts and experts like Gurman predicting that Apple will stay away from the number 13.

Famed Apple leaker Jon Prosser is just one of the experts suggesting the 12S model is on the horizon.

The theory for this stems from supposed leaks suggesting the next iPhone won’t be that much different to the current 12 model and therefore may only be given an ‘S’ title.

It could be a similar situation to when the iPhone 6S came out in 2015 after the 2014 release of the iPhone 6.

The same thing happened in 2018 when the iPhone XS came out as a follow up to 2017’s iPhone X.

Lots of people fear the number 13 because they believe it’s bad luck.

The number is sometimes not used as a floor number in buildings or on cruise ships.

However, this hasn’t seen Apple shy away from the number in the past.

The tech brand did bring out an iOS 13 and an A13 Bionic chipset.

Another theory is that Apple will bring out an iPhone 12S so that it’s 2022 iPhone 14 can be a design overhaul.
