‘It Was Only Going to Get Worse’- Dustin Poirier Says He Would Have Finished Conor McGregor Even Without the Freak Leg Injury

Dustin Poirier earned a second consecutive stoppage win against Conor McGregor at UFC 264. After stopping the Irishman in their rematch at UFC 257 via knockout, he won the trilogy as well. However, this time it was a freak leg break for McGregor that prompted the fight to be stopped at the end of the first round.

McGregor looked like his former self for the first few minutes of the fight, throwing an array of kicks on ‘The Diamond’. Many including the former two-division champion himself had suggested that the fight could have been different in the second round had it continued. But, Poirier doesn’t think so.

The former interim lightweight champion appeared at The MMA Hour show recently to talk to Ariel Helwani. Poirier believes he was in control of the fight and the outcome wouldn’t have been any different either way.

“If it wouldn’t happen at the end of that round, it was going to happen in the second or third round. It was only going to get worse. I definitely felt in control of the fight, even on the feet,” said Poirier.

What’s next for Dustin Poirier?

Poirier is in the prime spot to challenge lightweight champion Charles Oliveira for the belt next. However, his recent social media exchanges with Nate Diaz mean a super fight can be on the cards as well. The duo was previously set for a showdown at UFC 230. But that didn’t materialize.

Fans would love to see the pair throw down. And, in fact, Poirier might actually decide to skip his title shot to fight Nate Diaz next. If it indeed happens, remains to be seen.

The fourth fight against Conor McGregor is another possibility for the Louisiana native. Many believe that the trilogy fight didn’t have a proper ending to it and the duo should clash again to decide the better fighter. It’s hard to imagine anybody not opting for a big paycheque to fight McGregor.

So, options are in abundance for ‘The Diamond‘. Fans will keep a close eye on what he chooses to do next.
