Ed Sheeran has confirmed that he will release his new album = in October.

If you listen carefully, you can hear music publicists the world over frantically trying to reschedule their releases.

After making a comeback with his single Bad Habits, and subsequently topping the charts, the 30-year-old has confirmed his fifth album will be released on October 29, four years after he began recording it.

In the grand tradition of naming his albums after mathematical symbols (+, x and ÷ ), Ed has called his album =, which we’re assuming will be pronounced ‘Equal’, if you are buying it in a physical shop.

The star wrote on Instagram: ‘I started writing and recording this album June 2017. Its been a long, long process. I’ve been through love, loss, new life, grief and everything in between during the whole period of writing it, and I feel like it’s really a coming of age record.

‘I’ve never been more proud of a body of work, or more excited/nervous for you all to hear it.’

Ed added that the next single off the album is called Visiting Hours, which is dedicated to his friend and mentor Michael Gudinski, who died in March.

The artwork for = features the symbol in black, surrounded by butterfly prints and black paint splatters against a red backdrop.

Ed also revealed the tracklist consists of Tides, Shivers, First Times, Bad Habits, Overpass Graffiti, The Joker and The Queen, Leave Your Life, Collide, 2step, Stop The Rain, Love In Slow Motion, Visiting Hours, Sandman and Be Right Now.

The new record has big shoes to fill, as all four of Ed’s albums so far have reached number one in the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

2014’s x was a particular smash, selling a mind-boggling 7,900,000 copies worldwide.

Meanwhile, the release of ÷ in 2017 led to a change in how the Official Charts Company compiles the charts, after the songs from the album dominated the UK top 20.

His last album, No. 6 Collaborations Project, was released in 2019 and featured collabs with Justin Bieber, Cardi B, Stormzy, Khalid, Bruno Mars, Camila Cabello, Eminem and Travis Scott, among others.
