For many contestants, appearing on Love Island is not only a great way to meet a life partner, but can also be an effective way of ditching the daily grind in favour of fame and fortune.

Say goodbye to the 9-5 life, and say hello to celebrity guest appearances, sponsored Instagram posts, and Pretty Little Thing collaborations.

Some Islanders might not have much choice in the matter – with the school that PE teacher Hugo Hammond worked at confirming that he will not be returning after appearing on the show.

As the 2021 season finale gets closer, many viewers have been left wondering if bricklayer Liam will be the one building their kitchen extension (a girl can dream!).

Here is all you need to know about whether the contestants ever return to their day jobs.

Do Love Island contestants ever return to their original jobs?

Yes, many previous Islanders have returned to their jobs after the show has ended.

Most notably has been Dr Alex George from series 4, who went back to his job in A&E, and worked on the NHS frontline during Covid-19.

However, Dr Alex has been using his newfound fame for good by posting informational medical videos on his popular TikTok account
@dralexgeorge.

His account, which has over 741.3K followers, is filled with short videos on topics ranging from how to take a Covid-19 test to what to do if someone is having an asthma attack.

Recently, Alex was named the government’s Youth Mental Health Ambassador, appointed a role on ITV’s mental health advisory board, and has been retraining as a GP.

Another Islander that returned to work to help in the Covid-19 pandemic is series 5 contestant Anna Vakili, who works as a pharmacist.

She also used her social media platform to raise awareness about working on the frontline, and petitioned for pharmacy staff to get better protective equipment.

Malin Andersson – who recently revealed that she is pregnant – also rolled up her sleeves and got involved during the pandemic.

The season 2 contestant was previously a carer for her mother, who died in November 2017.

When Covid-19 broke out, Malin started caring for elderly people in their homes across Bedfordshire.

She told the BBC: ‘I couldn’t sit at home, knowing I had the skills and training.

‘I don’t need to do it financially but I’m getting so much satisfaction from it.’

From Covid-19 frontline to the Olympics – season 5 winner Greg O’Shea returned to his job as a rugby player, and competed for Ireland in the Tokyo 2020 games.

Greg’s rugby sevens team was selected for the Olympics after a dramatic win over France at their qualifying tournament in Monaco.

Another Love Island winner who returned to their day job – be it a very glamorous one – is Amber Davies.

Amber was a dancer before the show, and has since returned to the industry, but with a bit of razzle-dazzle.

Amber was in West End production 9 to 5: The Musical and is due to appear in Bring It On: The Musical.

Other Islanders who have returned to their day jobs include personal trainer Adam Maxted, professional athlete Theo Campbell, fitness instructor Marvin Brooks, and estate agent Harley Judge.

However, some Islanders have not been allowed to return to their original jobs.

Season 5 contestant Amy Hart previously said she was forced to quit her job as an air hostess because ‘people would be filming’.

Amy had intended on going back to her British Airways job after her stint on the show, hoping that her appearance on Love Island would boost her Instagram following.

Speaking on Heart Breakfast, she said: ‘I thought that I would be able to go back to my job afterwards and I thought brilliant, ’cause obviously you can get really good Instagram content around the world in all the destinations.

‘So I was like brilliant, I’ll just get a few hundred thousand Instagram followers then I can go back to my job and just get really good Instagram content around the world and then obviously, I can’t go back to my job.’

Amy had previously been warned by season 2 Islander Zara Holland that she should not appear on the dating show if she intended on keeping her job.

Zara was stripped of her Miss GB title after scenes of her having sexual relations with a fellow contestant on the show were shown on TV back in 2016.

Former Love Island winner Max Morely was a Durham cricket player before his time on the show. It is unclear why he did not return to the team following his stint – but, according to his LinkedIn profile, Morley now works in recruitment as an associate consultant.

Love Island continues tonight on ITV2 and ITV Hub at 9pm.
