How Manny Pacquiao Forced WWE to Hold SummerSlam 2021 on a Saturday For The First Time Since 1992

WWE SummerSlam is one of the company’s four major and oldest events. Termed as the ‘biggest party of the Summer’, the PPV is heavily promoted with huge matches. But something is different this year.

Not following the norm of organizing PPVs on Sunday, WWE scheduled SummerSlam for Saturday on 21st August. This would be the first SummerSlam to take place on a Saturday since 1992.

It is also the first SummerSlam to not be held on a Sunday since the 1994 event (which took place on a Monday). WWE is portraying SummerSlam as the biggest event of the year thanks to the full audience capacity. But why is it held on a Saturday?

The main reason for this change was allegedly the Stadium. According to Dave Meltzer, “So this is the deal, the reason it’s a Saturday is because the stadium in Vegas wanted a Saturday. However, it may not be in Vegas, but they already have the date. The date’s a bad date because it’s the same as Manny Pacquiao and Errol Spence.”

Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, and current WBA (Super) champion, Yordenis Ugá gave a tough competition to WWE but both are taking place in Vegas after all. Pac-Man’s battle will be at the T-Mobile Arena.

This is the second time SummerSlam is being held from a stadium since 1992 when it was held in Wembley, London. However, there could be another possible internal reason.

According to WWE President Nick Khan, WWE is planning to permanently move all their PPVs to Saturday. Khan also said WWE has booked a PPV on January 1st, 2020.

“Saturday may be a new day for future WWE pay-per-views events,” Khan revealed on the Q2 2021 Earnings call. “WWE saw that Atlanta, GA plans to have 300,000 people in the city for New Year’s Day – which is why WWE have scheduled a pay-per view for January 1st, 2022 in Atlanta.”

WWE Summerslam has big matches in store

The headlining event for this year’s SummerSlam is the titanic clash between WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns and John Cena. All of the WWE titles (except for the Women’s Tag Team title and Intercontinental) are going to be on the line.

WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg has challenged Bobby Lashley for the WWE title. WWE RAW Women’s Championship will see Nikki A.S.H, Rhea Ripley, and Charlotte on a triple threat match.

Sasha Banks has returned and invoked her rematch clause to face Bianca Belair for the SmackDown Women’s title. Sheamus will defend the US title against Damian Priest.

In the tag team sector, AJ Styles and Omos will face RK-Bro (Randy Orton and Riddle), and The Usos will face The Mysterios for the RAW and SmackDownTag Team titles respectively.

Singles matches include Edge vs Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre vs Jinder Mahal, and Alexa Bliss vs Eva Marie. This Saturday would definitely be the biggest party of the WWE it seems.
