WWE superstar Roman Reigns has hit out at CM Punk and insisted he was ‘never as good’ as John Cena or Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

The Universal Champion – who is defending his title against Cena on Saturday night at SummerSlam – has offered a pretty damning assessment of Punk’s past comments about part-timers taking main event spots in wrestling and suggested there could be other factors at play.

He told BT Sport’s Ariel Helwani: ‘I can see it from both perspectives. But I think you said it before, that “high tide raises all the boats” and everybody benefits.

‘So I do think there’s that strange threshold, but I think those statements are coming from bitter people who possibly thought they were better than they really were.

‘When it comes down to it, CM Punk was not as good or as over as a John Cena, wasn’t as good or as over or moved the needle like The Rock. It just was what it was.’

Not surprisingly, lots of fans were riled up by the Tribal Chief’s comments, which came as the wrestling world waits to see if Punk will make long awaited return on AEW Rampage tonight.

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley also didn’t take too kindly to Roman’s assessment as he insisted the Voice of the Voiceless was more than good enough to be put in those top spots.

He wrote: ‘CM PUNK WAS DAMN GOOD, AND DAMN OVER.

‘With one interview he changed the course of the wrestling business. He had great matches with a wide variety of opponents on a nightly basis.

‘When/if he returns to wrestling, he will once again be damn good and damn over.’

Punk’s yet to respond to Roman’s comments, with his heavily rumoured return set for tonight’s All Elite Wrestling show.

However, you can bet he’ll have something to say once he starts talking to the media again and inevitably gets asked about the jibe.
