Love Island 2021: Liberty Poole reveals the moment that crushed romance with Jake Cornish long before split

Liberty Poole has revealed the moment her relationship with Jake Cornish began to unravel after they split just days before the Love Island finale.

Last night’s crushing instalment saw Liberty and Jake decide to firmly call time on their summer loving, and leave the villa together.

The former Nandos waitress called Jake out over cruel digs, and said he didn’t love her the way she loved him. Essentially, the only way to move forward was to be true to herself.

Following the couple’s exit, Liberty has recalled the moment their relationship began to sink, long before the events of this week.

Two weeks ago, the islanders were shown clips of previous comments made in the series, with one piece of footage showing Jake admitting he didn’t fancy Liberty enough to ‘rip her clothes off’.

‘The clips hurt me, what was said, and I sort of swept it under the carpet and didn’t address it properly and one thing led to another, where it just became a bigger issue,’ she told The Sun.

‘And then we found out there were differences between us in how we see things and communicated about things. We just weren’t communicating in the same way we used to.

‘I was in love with Jake. And, of course, I still love and care for Jake. You don’t end things then just get over someone like that. But I think, in the long run, I made the right decision. You have to put your own feelings first and to make yourself happy. And that is what I have done.’

‘The hardest challenges are in the villa,’ she continued. ‘It is full of good-looking people and there is so much temptation, so I feel that if you can’t make it through the villa as a strong couple you won’t make it on the outside world, in there you face hard challenges and you are with people 24/7.’

Informing the other islanders of their exit, the pair explained they didn’t want to ‘take up a place’ in the villa and would rather the other couples enjoyed their final days.

Things had been shaky for the two since Jake returned from Casa Amor, with Liberty telling him: ‘I just don’t feel like you love me for me and I want someone who loves me for me.’

‘I feel like I can’t do anything right,’ she added. ‘I don’t want to continue this feeling like I have to change for anyone.’

To which a baffled Jake replied: ‘What are we saying then, are we saying we’ll go our separate ways then?’

Love Island continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV2.
