The Handmaid’s Tale season four concluded in the US earlier this summer but with the finale set to air in the UK this evening, will there be a season five on the way?

The latest series of the popular US drama has seen June Osborne (played by Elizabeth Moss) finally make it to Canada, to reunite with husband Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle).

Season four episode nine saw Esther Keyes (McKenna Grace) make a surprise return, with viewers pleased to learn she was indeed still alive.

Elsewhere, June and Luke continued their bid to save daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake) from Gilead.

With the series coming to a close tonight on Channel 4, fans are already waiting to hear what might be in store for the characters in the near future.

Will there be a Handmaid’s Tale season 5?

Luckily, it has already been confirmed season five of the show, which is based on the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, is on the way for fans.

Streaming service Hulu renewed the series back in December 2020, ahead of the season four premiere.

Creator Bruce Miller previously spoke out about whether season five would be the show’s last.

‘I’m never looking to end it,’ he said during Deadline’s Contenders TV virtual event.

‘I work with a group of very undifficult people; we have a lovely group of writers, a spectacular group of actors and visiting directors and our crew.

The showrunner praised the cast and crew for managing to make the entire show during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He went on to add: ‘I don’t know how you felt about the pandemic, but I certainly learned the things of my life that are pretty rare and working with these people is one of them.

‘So, honestly, yes, I know what the end is and I’m not going to overstay my welcome but I’m also not going to rush off if I don’t have to.

‘As long as I am writing for Elisabeth Moss, you know, it really doesn’t get much better.’

It’s good news about season five, but fans will have to wait a little while longer to find out whether the show will continue even further.

The Handmaid’s Tale airs on Sundays at 9pm on Channel 4 and is available to watch on All 4.
