Love Island bombshell Georgia Townend was originally supposed to appear in last year’s summer series of the show before it got cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, she has claimed.

The reality star, 28, was known this year as she arrived in the villa with her sights set on Hugo Hammond but she was dumped when he decided to couple up with Chloe Burrows.

However, this tale would never have unfolded on screens if wasn’t for Covid-19, as producers reportedly hoped to get her on the show last year.

She told the Daily Star Online: ‘I applied for the 2020 series but obviously that didn’t go ahead because of Covid-19.

‘The producers asked to keep my details on file and said if I was single they’d get back in contact with me, and they did!

‘I got the call last May that it wasn’t going to happen, but then they reached out to me again in January this year and asked if I was still single, which I was, so we restarted the process from there.’

Georgia explained that she got to the final stages of casting last year before she was told the process was going no further.

However, the fact she had done so well previously did not mean it was plain sailing for the television personality.

She added that she had to meet with television executives again and have medical and psychological evaluations to make sure she was fit for the show.

They also quizzed her on her dating history and she was told she was going to appear this year in May before flying out to Majorca in June.

Georgia recalled her experience of going into quarantine before entering the villa, admitting she struggled with her instant loss of independence.

She said she wasn’t even allowed to go to the local shop, with someone going food shopping for her.

The star explained that all she could do before entering the villa was read and watch the show.

The Love Island final airs this evening on ITV2 at 9pm.
